World Embroidery by Caroline Crabtree

The tribal and peasant peoples of the world encompass a rich heritage of patterns, motifs, textile designs and techniques, many of which have been handed down through the generations for hundreds of years. This book presents 30 embroidery projects featuring some of these traditional designs. In each case, an explanation of how the textiles and patterns were first produced and used is followed by detailed instructions for stitching and making up a new design, derived from the original source. The techniques covered include cross-stitch, applique, needlepoint, mirrorwork and different kinds of surface embroidery, and the finished items range from a simple embroidered box-lid to cushions, bed and table-linen, a footstool cover, a rug and embroidered pictures. The book is aimed at both beginners and the more experienced needleworker.
