Frank Dunlop was born in Kilkenny in 1947. After a short career in journalism with RTE he became Fianna Fail's press officer in 1974. When the party came into power in 1977, he took over the running of the Government Information Service. The following year the Taoiseach Jack Lynch, appointed him as Ireland's first Government Press Secretary, in which capacity he also served Lynch's successor, Charles Haughey. He also served two Fine Gael-Labour administrations before leaving the civil service in 1986 to join a public relations firm. He is married to Shelia and has a daughter, Sinead.
