Frederic Augustus Thesiger, 2nd Baron of Chelmsford and Major General of Her Majesty's Royal Army, accepts a commission in the Cape Colony after the tragic death of his wife and child.

Princess Nkosazane kaMpande, daughter of Zulu King Cetshwayo, flees Ulundi to the Buffalo River rather than endure a forced marriage to her father's half-brother.

The pair discover a historic connection on the plains of Africa, much to scandal, disgust and outrage from Cape Town to Ulundi. It's not long before plotters on both sides conspire to usurp their bond.
