A reader’s guide to Jeffrey Archer

No stranger to controversy, Jeffrey Archer is an English politician turned novelist – and it’s safe to say he’s more than found his feet in devoting his time to the latter. A man of many talents, Archer’s lively lifestyle has given him a keen insight into many of the workings of the human condition – which has gone on to inspire his writing in countless ways.

Born in London, Archer spent his childhood and early adult years in the West Country of England, in the coastal tourist town of Weston-Super-Mare. His early career was defined by both fundraising work and political positions in the Conservative Party, yet a series of scandals brought this chapter of his life to a close..

Through this hardship, Archer discovered his gifts as a novelist. His 1970s debut novel Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less was a breakout hit – and in the same decade, he released Kane and Abel, which remains his most famous book to this day.

More on Jeffrey Archer

Archer is known to speak of a highly iterative writing style, and is not above going through drafts of his manuscripts ten times or more in order to fine tune his work. This tendency towards perfectionism is certainly appreciated by his fans, not least since he remains an active author to this day.

While many of Archer’s books are independent narratives, he also publishes serials too – The Clifton Chronicles are his famous writings on the life of Harry Clifton, while many fans also appreciate his William Warwick detective books too.
Nowadays, Patterson is a writer who enjoys thousands, if not millions of fans around the world. He’s also a keen collaborator, having co-authored works with writers such as Mark Sullivan, Candice Fox, and even the former United States President, Bill Clinton.

On the more controversial side of things, Archer has also written prison diaries exploring his own life behind bars, which many fans find compelling for their wit and insight.

“I think I saw a torpedo, sir, but as I’ve never seen one before, I can’t be sure.”
