A reader’s guide to Mary Higgins Clark

Dubbed the ‘Queen of Suspense’, Mary Higgins Clark (1927-2020) was an American author whose books were all NYT and international bestsellers. Her debut novel, Where Are the Children?, is in its 75th printing.

At 7-years-old, Mary started keeping a diary. Her love of writing continued throughout her childhood, where she was often chastised by teachers for writing stories during class. She faced significant hardship growing up after her father passed away in his sleep, then living through poverty and losing her brother to spinal meningitis.

She worked as a switchboard operator and stewardess before marrying her husband. Unfortunately, she lost him to a heart attack, and turned to writing as a way to support their children. For several years, she struggled to make ends meet with low-paying writing jobs.
