Major new theological sections include: the development of the discipline of theology; 20th-century ecclesiology; a specific section on the ecclesiology of Vatican II; and the 9th-century sacramental debates. Two chapters have been rewritten and expanded, "Christianity and the world religions" and "Last things". Each bibliographical section now follows immediately after the chapter to which it refers.
