PARENTING UNDER PRESSURE Summary

PARENTING UNDER PRESSURE by Edited by Tim Booth

This book strives to break new ground by giving an insight into what it means to be a parent with learning difficulties. Very little is known about the lives and struggles of these parents. By looking at the common threads in their lives, the authors aim to produce personal accounts that are true to the experience of parents themselves. Using the life-story approach to give pride of place to the views of mothers and fathers, this study serves as a counterweight to research in which the parents as people make no appearance.

The authors try to harness their work to practical ends by drawing out its lessons for professionals. As well as offering a parents' view of parenting, the book also presents a challenge to our thinking about the rights and responsibilities of people with learning difficulties.

PARENTING UNDER PRESSURE Reviews

"...an important book...of real value to researchers, trainers and practitioners and deserves to be widely read" - Community Care "...excellent in-depth and personal insights into the subject, and is easy to read due to the recounting of interviews with parents...a particularly relevant book, addressing akey and hitherto neglected policy area." - British Journal of Learning Disabilities "...an excellent book." - British Journal of Social Work "...a useful and readable book, but it should be essential reading for all those working with parents who have learning difficulties." - Disability and Society "...an essential resource...If you can't persuade your manager to purchase it for your team, then buy it yourself." - Health Visitor "...a compelling, important, and unique addition to the literature on parents with learning difficulties. It is recommended for anyone involved with this population." - Social Science and Medicine
