Cacti and Succulents Reviews

Once again Crowood Press have produced an excellent guide to a horticultural group of plants, this time cacti and succulents. Much maligned for being boring and dust collectors, this book should dispel that myth once and for all. Author Graham Charles, a lifelong enthusiast and active proponent of their conservation in the wild, shares his love of these plants in a chatty, informative and addictive way. Aimed at both beginners and experts alike, it is a mix of cultivation and propagation details together with more detailed looks at the rarer and choicer members of the group. Illustrated throughout with lavish photographs clearly captioned, it is an excellent overview of the subject and Graham freely recommends further reading for each genus, displaying the cacti grower's particularly generous trait of share and share alike. Lists of societies, seed and plant suppliers are included to enable beginners to track down particular species together with magazines and periodicals to learn more. A hobby not over-popular in this country, it is one that offers the enthusiast a chance of building up their own special collection, meeting others and learning more about this diverse variety of plants so threatened today in their own environment. - Lucy Watson
