Vera is a child living in a caravan on a circus site shortly after World War II. Physically and mentally abused by an alcoholic mother and her violent lover, Vera is befriended by Hans, a kind, gentle, handyman horribly disfigured in the war. Suspecting Vera is being abused, but having no proof, Hans lovingly shows her how childhood should be. A special bond, as strong as father and daughter, grows. But then he is murdered. This loss is devastating, leaving Vera catatonic and heartbroken, and she vows never to love again. Convinced she knows who committed the crime, she plots revenge. At thirteen her chance appears, starting her journey down a dark path. Vera becomes a beautiful, intelligent woman with a ruthless ability to crush anyone who curbs her way. She eventually decides a husband and house would improve her lot, so sets about getting both. When the marriage falters and he meets someone else, she tries to murder him, but this time it is complicated. Beware of Neat and Tidy Vera.
