The Making of Us Summary

The Making of Us by Lisa Jewell

In a hospice in Bury St Edmunds, a man called Daniel is slowly fading away. His friend Maggie sits with him every day; she holds his hand and she listens to the story of his life, to his regrets and to his secrets. And then he tells her about the children he has never met and never will. He talks of them wistfully. His legacy, he calls them. Lydia, Dean and Robyn don't know each other. Yet. And they are all facing difficult changes. Lydia is still wearing the scars from her traumatic childhood and although she is wealthy and successful, her life is lonely and disjointed. Dean is a young man, burdened with unexpected responsibility, whose life is going nowhere. And Robyn wants to be a doctor, just like her father - a man she's never met. But is her whole life built on an illusion? Three people leading three very different lives. All lost. All looking for something. But when they slowly find their way into each other's lives, everything starts to change ...

The Making of Us Reviews

"Her best book yet ... Jewell has moved up a gear into David Nicholls territory." * Bookseller *
"Lisa Jewell has a unique gift for creating original, complex characters who actually resemble people we might know. When I read her I realise how few authors can actually do this. This book shows her at the top of her game; The Making Of Us is compelling, clever, humane and heartbreaking. It's a cliche to say I couldn't put it down, but I'm afraid it's true. Wonderful." -- Jojo Moyes
"We've been fans of Lisa Jewell for absolutely ages, don'cha know, but we are even more impressed than usual by the latest novel ... Jewell has completely upped her game with this beautifully observed novel." * 5 stars, heat *
"Ingenious plotting ... there's no denying the story itself is a compelling page-turner - which should be enough to make for another Lisa Jewell bestseller." -- A.N Wilson * Reader's Digest *
"A spirited novel of identity, love and loss." * Woman & Home *

About Lisa Jewell

Lisa Jewell had always planned to write her first book when she was fifty. In fact she wrote it when she was twenty-seven and had just been made redundant from her job as a secretary. Inspired by Nick Hornby's High Fidelity, a book about young people just like her who lived in London, she wrote the first three chapters of what was to become her first novel, Ralph's Party. It went on to become the bestselling debut novel of 1998. Fifteen bestselling novels later, she lives in London with her husband and their two daughters. Lisa writes every day in a local cafe where she can drink coffee, people-watch and, without access to the internet, actually get some work done . . .
