Pacific Profiles - Volume One Summary

Pacific Profiles - Volume One: Japanese Army Fighters New Guinea & the Solomons 1942-1944 by Michael Claringbould

The Pacific Profiles series presents the most accurate WWII aircraft profiles to date of Japanese aircraft in the South Seas theatre.

Volume One illustrates, by unit, Japanese Army Air Force fighter aircraft operating in New Guinea and the Solomons from December 1942 to April 1944. In this theatre numerous different aircraft types and their variants were assigned to eleven fighter regiments which formed the 4th Air Army. Unit insignia, camouflage and command markings varied from unit to unit, giving a wide variety of colour and markings. The profiles, based on photos, Japanese documents, Allied intelligence reports and post-war wreck investigations, are accompanied by brief histories of the relevant units and explanations of their role in the theatre.

The author, Michael Claringbould, is world-renown for his expertise in respect to wartime Japanese aviation. These profiles accurately portray Japanese Army Air Force fighters during this fascinating and esoteric component of the Pacific air war.

Pacific Profiles - Volume One Reviews

Valuable photographs including color photographs, and original artwork, enhance the deeply researched text. I consider this an essential title for modelers and students of the JAAF in the South Pacific. Highly recommended. * Aeroscale Kitmaker *
...this artwork-focused book ticks many boxes for those interested in the colours and markings of Japanese aircraft. * Flypast Magazine *
This is a detailed and highly researched book with colour profiles for 82 different aircraft [...] This is a colourful book which displays the considerable research and interpretation which must have been put into it. It is highly recommended for the modeller and the air wargamer but would also reward the general reader with an interest in these campaigns. * Miniature Wargames *
... a book that will definitely be used over and over again for reference. * Modeling Madness *
Extensive discussions about colors and markings, including special markings, or the absence of markings, explain the camouflage schemes. While the 58 black and white photos and 10 color photos provide the source, the 85 color profiles provide the modeler or miniature painter with the details and inspiration. * Historical Miniatures Gaming Society *
Beyond the appealing artwork Claringbould includes historical background for each unit, plus a few other odds and ends such as a chart showing the timelines of JAAF fighter units deployment in New Guinea. * Stone and Stone *
