In 1900 a young Japanese monk crossed from Nepal to Tibet and became the first outsider to reach the forbidden city of Lhasa. The idiosyncratic explorer overcame robbery, starvation and an appalling sense of direction to finally meet the Dalai Lama, and become a successful doctor.
