Introducing Genre and English for Specific Purposes provides an overview of how genre has been conceptualized and applied in ESP, as well as the features that distinguish ESP genre research and teaching from those of other genre schools. Introducing Genre and English for Specific Purposes is essential reading for students and pre-service teachers who are studying Genre, English for Specific Purposes or language teaching methodologies.

Introducing Genre and English for Specific Purposes Reviews

Hyon's book captures the breadth and depth of genre theory in ESP, drawing on the most recent publications in the field. Due to the inclusion of examples of teaching activities, the book would be useful for university students and preservice teachers who are studying genre, ESP and language teaching methodologies. I would also recommend this book to those who are familiar with genre studies in ESP because it charts the development of this theory over the last 50 years. The book's accessibility also makes it excellent reading for genre theorists from other traditions who would like to explore genre in the ESP tradition.

This book offers an excellent introduction to genre analysis and ESP genre-based pedagogy and is written in a lucid and reader-friendly manner. Each chapter is well argued and follows a clear organizational pattern with theories or approaches supported with many helpful examples and practical hands-on activities. Particularly worthy of note is Hyon's effort to provide the reader with abundant opportunities to practice imple-menting the concepts discussed and the analytical techniques covered in the book. I believe that the book should appeal to graduate students, pre-service and in-service teachers and scholars who are engaged in genre studies and ESP research.
