Knitted cakes? This must surely be the most unusual knitting book I have seen to date, but if you are weary with baby items, woolly hats and fluffy scarves then get ready to deck your house out with some conversation pieces.

The cakes and buns in this book really do look good enough to eat, and would make striking ornaments especially in any room where people also gather to eat the real thing. Choose from muffins, cup cakes, layer cakes, Christmas favourites, cherry pie and angel food. My own favorite has to be the iced donut, because it surely also serves another more practical purpose and is just the right size to be used as a bun ring. As this is a Twenty To Make series book there are indeed twenty projects, as well as the twenty other suggestions as variations on the main patterns, complete with photographs. This is not a book aimed at the beginner and there are no instructions on how to knit if you don't know how. But as there are plenty of books that teach this on the market (including many from Search Press) more experienced knitters can enjoy a book just filled with patterns. These are given in the usual UK form of instructions row by row, and are not difficult to follow. Yarns are named by type and shade rather than by trade name so rest assured that nothing will have been discontinued by the time the ink is dry! If you are an intermediate+ knitter looking for something different, then you have just found it.

Designs so delicious, you'll want to eat them! The perfect treat for chocoholics, cake-lovers and knitters with a sense of humour, this little book is big on ideas for knitting delicious, fat-free desserts. The cake on the cover is just the start - look inside and you'll find designs for cupcakes, swiss roll, Viennese whirls, wedding cake, and fruit tart if you're on a diet! The techniques used are very easy, which is just as well because there is no technique section. Each project is quick to knit and make up, and lots of fun to finish off with beads, buttons and ribbon. They're brilliant for using up oddments of yarn, and perfect for knitters looking for something a bit unusual - if you can stop drooling long enough to knit them!

Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, you'll have trouble resisting these truly scrumptious knits. A generous slice of chocolate gateau, delicious doughnuts, Viennese whirls, swiss rolls and fruit tarts... they're all on offer and they all look good enough to eat! The patterns are relatively simple to knit and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Plus, as they're small, they're also quick to knit, so you could work up enough to fill a bakery if you put your mind and needles to it. Lots of the tempting projects are embellished with beads, so beginners will get to learn new skills as they work their way through the book. The mouth-watering projects make great gifts for kids' birthdays or for friends on a diet - better to have a slice of cake with zero calories than none at all, surely? If you know someone who's getting married there's even a slice of wedding cake that will make a wonderful keepsake.
