The Bell Jar follows the story of a young woman, Esther Greenwood, entering the fashion world in New York in the early 50s. She wins an internship at a high-end fashion magazine and embarks on her new journey, full of excitement and optimism that this is the first rung on the ladder to make it as a successful writer.
However, the pressures of work alongside trying to keep up with the fast-paced social life that goes hand in hand with the job mean Esther soon finds herself spiralling out of control.

Her challenges with relationships and feeling as though she is never going to be taken seriously results in her falling into a deep depression.
The Bell Jar is the only novel Sylvia Plath ever wrote, (Plath is mostly famous for her poetry). The book is partly based on her own experiences and dealings with mental illness. It was initially published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas and is still hugely popular today.

About Sylvia Plath

Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at Smith College. In 1955 she went to Cambridge University on a Fulbright scholarship, where she met and later married Ted Hughes. She published one collection of poems in her lifetime, The Colossus (1960), and a novel, The Bell Jar (1963); Ariel was published posthumously in 1965. Her Collected Poems, which contains her poetry written from 1956 until her death, was published in 1981 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
