Like many other towns in South Wales the fortunes of nineteenth century Newport were closely tied to a massive rise in demand for iron and coal. The opening of the Monmouthshire Canal in 1796, followed by the building of Town Dock in 1842 with its supported network of railways, transofrmed Newport from a small town involved in coastal trading activities to a major industrial centre with shipping links throughout the World.  The 200 images from the collections of Newport Museum and Art Gallery presented here dramatically convey the vibrant and ever changing nature of life in this town. The photographs place emphasis on the people of Newport, both at work and play. They introduce many of the individuals and organisations which have shaped our town's history, helping to unlock some of the stories and events which have contributed to life in a continually evolving community.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49510081757457,"sku":"GOR004413370","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51505195024657,"sku":"GOR004379214","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752403389.jpg?v=1750978622"},{"product_id":"cardiff-city-football-club-1947-1971-book-richard-shepherd-9780752407913","title":"Cardiff City Football Club 1947-1971","description":"Cardiff City AFC 1947-71","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49519930573073,"sku":"GOR005278091","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53029512053009,"sku":"GOR014705927","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752407910.jpg?v=1761042729"},{"product_id":"central-birmingham-1920-1970-book-keith-turner-9780752403403","title":"Central Birmingham 1920-1970","description":"This companion volume to Central Birmingham 1870-1920 captures the changing face of the city over a further half century using a selection of nearly 200 old photographs, many of which have never before been published. The book portrays not just the streets and buildings but also the men, women and children of the city as they went about their daily business during both peace and war and the postwar period of rebuilding and reshaping. Although the village was mentioned in Domesday Book, it retained the status of a small village until it became formally included in greater Birmingham in 1891. It quickly became a bustling suburb although to this day retains much of the charm and identity of a village community.  This fascinating collection of over 200 old photographs has been drawn mainly from the extensive collections of the Birmingham Libraries and the author, a keen local historian, is also a librarian in a local branch library. The photographs show all aspects of life in the community over a period of more than a hundred years. Particularly interesting are the views of rural Harborne at the turn of the century and also scenes in the ChadValley Company, probably Britain's best known toy manufacturer, which had its factory in the area from the 1890s until the 1970s. There are also some nostalgic views of the long-lamented Harborne railway station.  This book will appeal to all who know and love the area and would enjoy a peep into its recent past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49534485758225,"sku":"GOR003058699","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53019840217361,"sku":"GOR005609934","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752400541.jpg?v=1767869260"},{"product_id":"dartford-book-peter-boreham-9780752401416","title":"Dartford","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49552051831057,"sku":"GOR001844985","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752401416.jpg?v=1751009745"},{"product_id":"king-s-norton-book-pauline-caswell-9780752410524","title":"King's Norton","description":"Kings Norton is just over five miles from the bustling centre of Birmingham, close to the city boundary with Hereford and Worcester,yet it retains considerable evidence of its past history, with its Roman road and cluster of old buildings around a village green. The thirteenth-century parish churchcof St Nicolas with its crocketed spire is a well known landmark and just one of the buildings of historic interest. There is also the Saracens Head, a fifteenth-century wool merchant's house where Queen Henrietta Maria stayed overnight during the Civil War and the Old Grammar School, where Thomas Hall was the seventeenth-century headmaster, a Puritan with a poor opinion of women!  Despite its rural origins, Kings Norton has also seen the rise of a number of industries, due mainly to the two major canals, the Worcester and Birmingham and the Stratford upon Avon, which meet at Lifford and the two railway lines, the LMS and the GWR, that divide the area.  Drawn from the extensive photographic archive of the Local Studies and History Section of Birmingham Central Library, this fascinating collection of over 200 old photographs vividly reflects many of the changes that have occurred in the area since the turn of the century and even before. Pauline Caswell, who works at Kings Heath Library, is the author of Northfield in the same series.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49560456462609,"sku":"GOR003806510","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752410520.jpg?v=1764845460"},{"product_id":"donnington-and-muxton-book-allan-frost-9780752422503","title":"Donnington and Muxton","description":"A history of Donnington and Muxton","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49601235026193,"sku":"GOR005252591","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752422502.jpg?v=1751427922"},{"product_id":"ryhope-and-silksworth-book-j-n-pace-9780752410012","title":"Ryhope and Silksworth","description":"The former agricultural villages of Ryhope and Silksworth expanded rapidly in the latter half of the nineteenth century as the previously hidden coal seams were exploited. This volume traces the changes and developments from the time when 'coal was king' to the present, when it was only a memory.  This collection of over 200 old photographs illustrates the story of working folk and the events of the two villages over this past century. The book shows the old streets, shops, pubs, churches and schools. We see people at work, at leisure and in sport. Ryhope and Silksworth collieries are featured and the stories of miners recalled. The images also show the community's struggle for better conditions in a harsh working environment.  The majority of the photographs have been collected by Jim Pace over the past thirty-five years from donations by local people. It is to the residents of Ryhope and Silksworth, both past and present, that this book is dedicated.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49613023183121,"sku":"GOR004542899","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52856415060241,"sku":"GOR005716760","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752410016.jpg?v=1761041622"},{"product_id":"chelmsford-book-stan-jarvis-9780752407340","title":"Chelmsford","description":"Chelmsford has a long and varied hiatory: Orginally a Roman camp en route to Colchester, the town quickly developed into a signifcant trading centre and evetually, the County Town. With the increasing industrialisation of the nineteenth century Chelmsford expanded; new factories and workshops attracted large numbers of people and the subsequent building began to shape the town we see today.  The art of photography coincided with much of this development and one local family, the Spaldings, witnessed and charted many of the changes that occurred. Frederick Spalding and his sons are the 'Photographic Artists' to whom we owe many of the fascinating and informative images in this collection. Some of them were even annotated by the photographers, providing us with a unique, personal record of the changing town and a way of life that now no longer exists. The people of Chelmsford, from the visiting Prince of Wales to Dick the Pieman in Chelmsford Market are also vividly represented. The death in 1947 of the third and last Frederick Spalding - a wartime pilot who took the first aerial photograph of the city in 1920 - marked the end of this remarkable photographic dynasty.  Miraculously much of the Spalding photographic collection was preserved by the foresight of the late COunty Archivist and the author, Stan Jarvis, as Deputy Borough Librarian and Museum Curator, who retrieved numerous albums of annotated images from the garage of a house awaiting a vist from the dustman! Now some of those evocative and irreplacable photographs, together with those of the author and skilled local photographer Peter Russell, appear together in this memorable collection which will prove irresistible to all those who know and love Chelmsford.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666755461393,"sku":"GOR004497919","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52108975931665,"sku":"GOR010390417","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752407341.jpg?v=1761040974"},{"product_id":"around-stanley-book-jack-hair-9780752407944","title":"Around Stanley","description":"This book is part of the Images of England series, which uses old photographs and archived images to show the history of various local areas in England, through their streets, shops, pubs, and people.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50122838212881,"sku":"GOR003969451","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51573920858385,"sku":"GOR007035940","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52449351860497,"sku":"GOR011975538","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752407945.jpg?v=1751296622"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/archive-photographs-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
