Three case studies are highlighted: Birmingham in 1875; Sydney after the smallpox epidemic of 1881; and San Francisco after the outbreak of plague in 1900. The book argues that there is a clear genre of slumland representation in English-speaking popular newspapers of the period. Its contrived images of \"the slum\" have been misinterpreted by historians in their analysis of urban social conditions and of urban social reform. The author argues that uninformed reflection on and analysis of contemporary newspaper representations of slumland can be misleading in normal historical research. He asserts that slumland stories were a means of constructing and reinforcing popular \"common-sense\" views of the slum amidst the indeterminancies of modern big-city living. The landscape of the slum and the behaviour of its inhabitants were stereotypes which were used by newspapers to help clarify and consolidate the axioms of bourgeois city culture. This text is an attempt to connect firmly modern cultural history to a well-established important section of mainstream social history research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49592760664337,"sku":"GOR010194306","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0718513894.jpg?v=1750784663"},{"product_id":"slums-book-alan-mayne-9781780238098","title":"Slums","description":"In this comprehensive global history, Alan Mayne explores the evolution and meaning of the 'slum', from its origins in London early in the nineteenth century to its use to describe favela communities in the lead up to the Rio de Janeiro Olympic games in 2016.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49734657245457,"sku":"NGR9781780238098","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50818740224273,"sku":"GOR008853792","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51122344689937,"sku":"GOR014180670","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51406444724497,"sku":"GOR011594005","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53062872334609,"sku":"CIN1780238096G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1780238096.jpg?v=1766140599"},{"product_id":"oxford-handbook-of-the-modern-slum-book-alan-mayne-9780190879457","title":"The Oxford Handbook of the Modern Slum","description":"The modern slum is as prevalent as its stereotypes. Today, a slum is often understood to be a place of extreme poverty in the developing world-a place disordered, lacking the basic amenities of life, traumatized by violence, and perpetuated by dysfunctional families and disaffected extremists. Yet the word “slum” was not coined in the twenty-first century's developing world or its recent past. The word emerged in early nineteenth-century London, and its use expanded as modernization created what is now the developed world and its client territories.  The Oxford Handbook of the Modern Slum explores the history of the modern slum, connecting nineteenth-century iterations through multiple pathways to its contemporary existence. With chapters by more than twenty scholars, this Handbook brings an array of important and original perspectives and methodologies to bear on slums, real and imagined. Its analysis ranges across Europe, North America, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and sub-Saharan Africa.  The Handbook probes the impact of gender and race on urban social disadvantage and traces the development of private and state-sponsored intervention-as well as tourist interest-in urban poverty. It suggests that characterizations of slumland disequilibrium, dysfunctionality, and unsustainability should be offset by evidence of make-do enterprise, strategic determination, resilience, homeliness, and neighborliness. Drawing upon anthropology, archaeology, architecture, geography, history, politics, sociology and urban planning, the Handbook delves into households and communities whose existence has been hidden by stereotypes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999663558929,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999665983761,"sku":"NIN9780190879457","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0190879459.jpg?v=1772035420"},{"product_id":"resources-for-the-future-book-alan-mayne-9780313289118","title":"Resources for the Future","description":"Whatever profession one might be in today, the overriding priority is to anticipate future developments--political, economic, and social--in order to keep pace with this headlong, accelerating era. He first examines major problems and issues occurring worldwide, surveys different regimes, and assesses the wide variety of active and emerging political movements. Mayne then explores political paradigms and ideologies through a main political spectrum to various alternatives. He outlines some possible elements for a new political paradigm that would be holistic in several different ways. Finally, he outlines scenarios for three possible futures and presents conclusions that indicate what can be done to achieve a political transiton to maximize the prospects for a good human future in the 21st century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52486218776849,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52486219628817,"sku":"NLS9780275961510","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780275961510.jpg?v=1759858889"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-alan-mayne.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
