Backroads travelers will find that it fits the Valley perfectly. Most people know the Shenandoah Valley for its Civil War–era history, from Robert E. Lee's capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 1859 to Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign of 1862 to the Battle of New Market in 1864. Fewer know that the Winchester area was home to George Washington, explorer Richard Byrd, novelist Willa Cather, and singer Patsy Cline. Or that Thomas Jefferson owned the geologic wonder known as Natural Bridge. Or that the McCormick Farm near Steeles Tavern was the site of a revolutionary breakthrough in agriculture in the early 1800s. The word Shenandoah may have had as many spellings as there are stars in the sky, but the area’s scenic vistas are practically endless. Travelers will know they've reached the Valley when every turn in the road reveals another photoworthy image of stunning mountain views, scenic rolling fields, or quaint country towns and villages. From the picturesque Goshen Pass, to the winding country roads between Lexington and Staunton, to the Mennonite farms around Harrisonburg, to the dramatic river confluence at Harpers Ferry, the Shenandoah Valley has been attracting visitors and inspiring artists, photographers, and writers for more than 200 years. The thirteen tours in this book explore areas of unspoiled countryside and Appalachian landscapes within easy range of metropolitan centers like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Richmond, and Norfolk. Originally from San Antonio, Andrea Sutcliffe has a journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a writer, editor, and publications manager in the Washington, DC, area for twenty years. Her writing and editing career began in 1990 as director of the EEI Press in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1996, Andrea Sutcliffe moved to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley to devote herself full-time to writing. Andrea’s love of her new home in the mountains of western Virginia, and a desire to learn more about the region’s fascinating history, led to her book, Touring the Shenandoah Valley Backroads.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49951132942609,"sku":"CIN0895873869G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50944263225617,"sku":"CIN0895873869VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009275756817,"sku":"NIN9780895873866","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52331414618385,"sku":"NLS9780895873866","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0895873869.jpg?v=1750851499"},{"product_id":"new-york-public-library-writer-s-guide-to-style-and-usage-book-andrea-sutcliffe-9780062700643","title":"New York Public Library Writer's Guide to Style and Usage","description":"Covers usage, grammar, style, copyright, text preparation, editing, typography, production, and printing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50343573356817,"sku":"CIN0062700642VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50343591837969,"sku":"CIN0062700642G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53433015337233,"sku":"CIN0062700642A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0062700642.jpg?v=1751355458"},{"product_id":"romantic-virginia-book-andrea-sutcliffe-9780895872555","title":"Romantic Virginia","description":"In 1969, the Virginia State Travel Service introduced Virginia is for Lovers as the state's tourism slogan. A 1992 survey revealed that three out of four Americans could still correctly identify the slogan. Since almost everyone knows that Virginia is for lovers, it's only fitting that there is now a guidebook to help Virginians and visitors to the state find all the romantic things to do there. The well-known and off-the-beaten-path attractions in Romantic Virginia offer escapes and activities for every age, budget, and season of the year. The chapters describe the most romantic places to stay and eat; historic homes and gardens; outdoor activities from hang gliding to ice skating; historic sites and museums; musical and theatrical productions; art museums and galleries; wineries; sporting events; and festivals and fairs. Sidebars throughout the book offer dozens of suggestions for romantic getaways in 14 Virginia cities and regions. But this is not just your usual travel guide. In the chapter describing romantic places to stay, there's a sidebar that lists bed-and-breakfasts, inns, and historic homes and gardens that host weddings and receptions. In the same chapter, you can find rustic mountain lodges, old Southern plantations, colonial-era townhouses, pastel-painted Victorian mansions, and fancy city hotels. The restaurant section not only includes special places where couples can celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or simply the fun of enjoying great food together, but also lists several old-fashioned drive-ins and soda fountains. Here are just a few of the hundreds of activities suggested in Romantic Virginia: -- Take a tall-ship cruise on the Elizabeth River inNorfolk-- Taste Italian-style Virginia wines in a Tuscan-style farmhouse on the Blue Ridge Parkway-- Watch the wild-pony roundup in Chincoteague-- Take a ride in a biplane after watching stunt fliers at the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton-- Listen to opera outdoors at the Ashlawn Summer Music Festival-- Picnic beside one of the state's five covered bridges-- Go whitewater rafting (or take a more sedate paddle-wheel boat ride) in downtown Richmond","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50367506612497,"sku":"CIN0895872552G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53231987654929,"sku":"CIN0895872552VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0895872552.jpg?v=1751234625"},{"product_id":"touring-the-shenandoah-valley-backroads-book-andrea-sutcliffe-9780895871817","title":"Touring the Shenandoah Valley Backroads","description":"The 13 tours cover the area from Harpers Ferry to Roanoke.
