It is a physical theory describing Nature. Lectures on Quantum Chromodynamics concentrates, however, not on the phenomenological aspect of QCD; books with comprehensive coverage of phenomenological issues have been written. What the reader will find in this book is a profound discussion on the theoretical foundations of QCD with emphasis on the nonperturbative formulation of the theory: What is gauge symmetry on the classical and on the quantum level? What is the path integral in field theory? How to define the path integral on the lattice, keeping intact as many symmetries of the continuum theory as possible? What is the QCD vacuum state? What is the effective low energy dynamics of QCD? How do the ITEP sum rules work? What happens if we heat and\/or squeeze hadronic matter? Perturbative issues are also discussed: How to calculate Feynman graphs? What is the BRST symmetry? What is the meaning of the renormalization procedure? How to resum infrared and collinear singularities? And so on.The book is an outgrowth of the course of lectures given by the author for graduate students at ITEP in Moscow. Much extra material has been added.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067048231185,"sku":"NIN9789810243319","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52616602059025,"sku":"NLS9789810243319","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9810243316.jpg?v=1751254886"},{"product_id":"witten-index-book-andrei-smilga-9789811293177","title":"Witten Index","description":"The book is devoted to vacuum structure of supersymmetric quantum mechanical and field theories. The Witten Index (the title of book) is a powerful theoretical tool, which allows one to find out whether supersymmetry breaks down spontaneously in a given theory or not. This is the main physical interest of this notion, but the latter has also many beautiful purely mathematical connotations. It represents a variant of the so-called equivariant index introduced by Cartan back in 1950 and is closely related to the Atiyah-Singer index.In his previous book 'Differential Geometry through Supersymmetric Glasses', World Scientific, 2020, the author showed how the supersymmetric language allows one to describe, in a rather transparent way, some known facts of differential geometry and also derive new results in this field.This book is mostly addressed to experts in quantum field theory, but the first three chapters has an introductory textbook nature and can be read by a non-expert. In Chapters 4 and 5, the general aspects of the Witten index are explained and the relationship with pure mathematical problems is elucidated. Chapters 6, 7, 8 are devoted to four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories: pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in Chapter 6, the theories including a nonchiral (Chapter 7) and chiral (Chapter 8) matter. Chapter 9 is devoted to the so-called maximal supersymmetric quantum mechanics obtained by a dimensional reduction of the 10-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In Chapter 10, the numbers of supersymmetric vacua in 3-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories is calculated. Finally, in Chapter 11, the author discusses some relatives of the Witten index, such as the indices for the 4-dimensional theories compactified on S3 x R, rather than 4-torus or the so-called Cecolli-Fendley-Intriligator-Vafa index.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51384400052497,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51384401166609,"sku":"NIN9789811293177","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52617258598673,"sku":"NLS9789811293177","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9811293171.jpg?v=1751066042"},{"product_id":"digestible-quantum-field-theory-book-andrei-smilga-9783319599205","title":"Digestible Quantum Field Theory","description":"This book gives an intermediate level treatment of quantum field theory, appropriate to a reader with a first degree in physics and a working knowledge of special relativity and quantum mechanics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52335946432785,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52335947055377,"sku":"NLS9783319599205","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319599205.jpg?v=1758161739"},{"product_id":"digestible-quantum-field-theory-book-andrei-smilga-9783319867359","title":"Digestible Quantum Field Theory","description":"This book gives an intermediate level treatment of quantum field theory, appropriate to a reader with a first degree in physics and a working knowledge of special relativity and quantum mechanics. It aims to give the reader some understanding of what QFT is all about, without delving deep into actual calculations of Feynman diagrams or similar.  The author serves up a seven‐course menu, which begins with a brief introductory Aperitif. This is followed by the Hors d'oeuvres, which set the scene with a broad survey of the Universe, its theoretical description, and how the ideas of QFT developed during the last century. In the next course, the Art of Cooking, the author recaps on some basic facts of analytical mechanics, relativity, quantum mechanics and also presents some nutritious “extras” in mathematics (group theory at the elementary level) and in physics (theory of scattering). After these preparations, the reader should have a good appetite for the Entrées ‐ the central par  t of the book where the Standard Model is described and explained.   After Trou Normand, the restive pause including human stories about physicists and no formulas, the author serves the Dessert, devoted to supersymmetry (a very beautiful theory that is still awaiting a direct experimental confirmation), to general relativity and to the mystery of quantum gravity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52483714941201,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52483716055313,"sku":"NLS9783319867359","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319867359.jpg?v=1759855151"},{"product_id":"continuous-advances-in-qcd-book-andrei-smilga-9789810218461","title":"Continuous Advances In Qcd","description":"This workshop was attended by leading experts in the field. This workshop had a special status: it was dedicated to the memory of the late Vladimir Gribov. The memorial notes of Yuri Dokshitzer open the volume, which includes more than 30 articles on the different aspects of QCD. Since then, many research papers have been written on this subject. Unfortunately not all the results in this field known to mathematicians have obtained a transparent physical interpretation, even if this new physical technique has also allowed many mathematical results to be derived which are completely new, in particular, hyper-Kaehler and the so-called HKT geometry. But in almost 40 years, no comprehensive monograph has appeared on this subject. So this book written by an expert in supersymmetric quantum field theories, supersymmetric quantum mechanics and its geometrical applications, addresses this yearning gap.It comprises three parts: The first, GEOMETRY, gives basic information on the geometry of real, complex, hyper-Kaehler and HKT manifolds, and is principally addressed to the physicist. The second part 'PHYSICS' presents information on classical mechanics with ordinary and Grassmann dynamics variables. Besides, the author introduces supersymmetry and dwells in particular on the representation of supersymmetry algebra in superspace. And the last and most important part of the book 'SYNTHESIS', is where the ideas borrowed from physics are used to study purely mathematical phenomena.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52692728086801,"sku":"NLS9789811206771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52763936817425,"sku":"NIN9789811206771","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789811206771.jpg?v=1762342723"},{"product_id":"geometry-meets-supersymmetry-book-andrei-smilga-9789819817665","title":"Geometry Meets Supersymmetry","description":"This book is devoted to description of different geometric structures, including the classical structures of differential geometry like de Rham complex, Dolbeaux complex and  Dirac complex and also some structures that have not attracted yet an attention of mathematicians in the language of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The book is addressed both to physicists and mathematicians.The first part is addressed mainly to physicists and describes basic properties of smooth manifolds of different type: real, complex, Kaehler, hyperkaehler and HKT. The second part is addressed to mathematicians and describes basic properties of classical and quantum mechanical systems, including supersymmetric systems with Grassmann dynamic variables. The third part is called Synthesis: we show how the physical methods allow one to describe in a simple way and understand many nontrivial geometric facts. For example, the famous Atiyah-Singer theorem admits a rather natural and simple supersymmetric interpretation.This book is an updated and expanded version of the book Differential geometry through supersymmetric glasses published in 2020 by World Scientific. New material on hyperkaehler geometry and its supersymmetric description and on the gauge fields in CPn manifolds is added.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53181368729873,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53181368795409,"sku":"NLS9789819817665","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789819817665.jpg?v=1772242239"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-andrei-smilga.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
