Angelo Guerragio and Giovanni Paolini analyze Volterra’s most important contributions to mathematics and their applications, as well as his outstanding organizational achievements in scientific policy. Volterra was one of the founding fathers of functional analysis and the author of fundamental contributions in the field of integral equations, elasticity theory and population dynamics (Lotka-Volterra model). He delivered keynote lectures on the occasion of the International Congresses of Mathematicians held in Paris (1900), Rome (1908), Strasbourg (1920) and Bologna (1928).  He became involved in the scientific development in united Italy and was appointed senator of the kingdom in 1905. One of his numerous non-mathematical activities was founding the National Research Council (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR). During the First World War he was active in military research. After the war he took a clear stand against fascism, which was the starting point for his exclusion. In 1926 he resigned as president of the world famous Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and was later on excluded from the academy. In 1931 he was one of the few university lecturers who denied to swear an oath of allegiance to the fascistic regime. In 1938 he suffered from the impact of the racial laws.  The authors draw a comprehensive picture of Vito Volterra, both as a great mathematician and an organizer of science.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52129779155217,"sku":"NLS9783642432477","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52761834848529,"sku":"NIN9783642432477","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642432477.jpg?v=1757497939"},{"product_id":"italian-mathematics-between-the-two-world-wars-book-angelo-guerraggio-9783764365554","title":"Italian Mathematics Between the Two World Wars","description":"During the first decades of the last century Italian mathematics was considered to be the third national school due to its importance and the high level of its numerous - searchers. The decision to organize the 1908 International Congress of Mathematicians in Rome (after those in Paris and Heidelberg) confirmed this position. Qualified Italian universities were permanently included in the tour organized for young mathematicians' improvement. Even in the years after the First World War, Rome (together with Paris and G ttingen) remained an important mathematical center according to the American ma- ematician G. D. Birkhoff. Now, after almost a century, we can state that the golden age of Italian mathem- th th ics reduces to the decades between the 19 and the 20 century. In the centre of interest stood the algebraic geometry school with Guido Calstelnuovo, Federico Enriques and Francesco Severi acting as key figures. Their work led to an almost complete systema- zation of the theory of curves to the complete classification of the surfaces and to the bases of a general theory of algebraic varieties. Other important contributions came from the Italian school of analysis. Its main representative was Vito Volterra - an outstanding analyst with a strong interest in mathematical physics - who produced important results in real analysis and the theory of integral equations and contributed to the initiation of functional analysis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150921167121,"sku":"NLS9783764365554","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783764365554.jpg?v=1757611617"},{"product_id":"vito-volterra-book-angelo-guerraggio-9783642272622","title":"Vito Volterra","description":"Vito Volterra (1860-1940) was one of the most famous representatives of Italian science in his day.
