Less well known is that Walton the gifted painter was also a prolific author of nonfiction and autobiographical novels. Born in San Francisco when there were still horses in the streets, and raised in the Central Valley, in 1929 at age fifteen he entered Reno, as he related in his first novel, got off the train, and was never quite the same. This eccentric and brilliant man was shaped by and helped shape Nevada's cultural history during Reno's heyday and Virginia City's epoch as a bohemian mecca. A Nevada Life surveys Walton's artworks and writings as it follows the life of this colorful original. The narrative reveals new angles on such icons of Reno's past as Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Robert Caples, Robert Laxalt and the daughters of Judge George Bartlett. Through Walton's first marriage the reader hears the intimate story of a Basque institution, the Etcheberrys' Santa Fe Hotel, and experiences life in a Basque sheep camp. Walton's sojourns in Hollywood bring in composer Bernard Herrmann, writer Norman Corwin, director Alfred Hitchcock and more. Walton died in 2005 at ninety-one.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49598400168209,"sku":"GOR012977351","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50396487909649,"sku":"CIN1634993098VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1634993098.jpg?v=1750895789"},{"product_id":"nevada-they-knew-book-anthony-shafton-9781634990301","title":"The Nevada They Knew","description":"The Nevada They Knew is the story of a legendary friendship. Robert Caples (1908-1979) was Nevada's leading artist of the twentieth century, Walter Van Tilburg Clark (1909-1971) its leading novelist. Caples was a private, quiet man, extremely handsome, famously attractive to women, and five times married. Clark was gregarious, a compulsive talker, also handsome, but faithfully wed. Caples' works range from portraits of divorc (c)es and risque cartoon maps of Reno during the heyday of its divorce mill, to charcoals of Nevada Indians, to profoundly spiritual landscapes - especially of Great Basin mountains. Clark's fame rests on The Ox-Bow Incident, but his finest novel is The City of Trembling Leaves, a celebration of youth based in part on the early years of his friendship with Caples in Nevada. Shafton goes back and forth between the novel and the men's biographies to honor their lives and works, and to understand the contrasting reasons Clark too soon stopped publishing fiction and Caples eventually stopped painting. This book is also a memoir, of Shafton's friendship with Caples, his attachment to Clark's novel City, and his connection to a land both men taught him to love.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50387899089169,"sku":"CIN1634990307G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1634990307.jpg?v=1750992455"},{"product_id":"dream-singers-book-anthony-shafton-9780471395355","title":"Dream-Singers","description":"Advance Praise for Dream-Singers You will find a great storehouse of folk and literary treasures in this ambitious book that speaks to anyone who has ever thought about his or her dreams. The general reader interested in exploring the world of dreams could not obtain a better introduction and grounding than from this book. Academic psychologists, therapists, and professional dreamworkers alike will find it to be an incomparable survey and sampling of the growing literature on dreaming. In Part I, Shafton summarizes sleep laboratory discoveries, then considers theories about dream generation and meaning that have arisen from these discoveries. Part II discusses major Euro-American schools of dream interpretation in the twentieth century: Freud, Jung, Existential, Cultural, and Gestalt. Also included are chapters dealing with various topics of interest: the dream styles of people of both genders, and of people with certain psychiatric diagnoses; non-interpretive approaches to dreamwork; dream incubation; lucid dreaming; dream re-entry; dreams of the blind; post-traumatic nightmares; and many more. Dream Reader provides an integrated review of the whole literature of dream psychology—the clinical, academic, and also the serious popular literature. It also presents sizeable extracts from the original sources for the reader's own critical evaluation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51007157240081,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007159927057,"sku":"NIN9780791426180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51734209298705,"sku":"CIN0791426181G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52345082020113,"sku":"NLS9780791426180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0791426181.jpg?v=1750745931"},{"product_id":"dream-singers-book-anthony-shafton-9781630260484","title":"Dream Singers","description":"Advance Praise for Dream-Singers You will find a great storehouse of folk and literary treasures in this ambitious book that speaks to anyone who has ever thought about his or her dreams.
