He received his doctorate of medicine in 1885 and worked in Vienna's General Hospital, but ultimately abandoned medicine in favour of writing. His works were often controversial, both for their frank description of sexuality as well as for their strong stand against anti-Semitism. Schnitzler was branded as a pornographer after the release of his play Reigen, and his works were later cited as an example of Jewish filth. A member of the avant garde group Young Vienna (Jung Wien), Schnitzler toyed with formal as well as social conventions. He specialized in shorter works like novellas and one-act plays, and in short stories he showed himself to be one of the early masters of microfiction. Amongst his works are: Anatol (1893), Fair Game (Freiwild - 1896), Paracelsus (1899), Bertha Garlan (1900), Lieutenant Gustl (1900), The Prophecy (1905) and Living Hours (1911).
Spat Abends. Set in fin-de-siecle Austria - the cafes, salons, and musical concerts frequented by the Viennese elite - Schnitzler's perceptive exploration of the creative process and the private lives and public aspirations of urban Jewish intellectuals ranks with the highest achievements of Karl Kraus and Robert Musil. The novel's central character, Baron Georg von Wergenthin, is a handsome young composer whose troubled relations with women, musical collaborators, and representatives of the old social order make Schnitzler's book a revealing investigation of individual psychology and social allegory. In his comprehensive introduction, Russell Berman situates the book within the literary and political history of Central Europe and analyzes its relation to psychoanalysis, Marxism, musical aesthetics, and the legacy of European modernism.

Originally translated as None But the Brave in 1926, Lieutenant Gustl is one of the great Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler's most accomplished novels. In Desire and Delusion, Ms. Schaefer has translated three of Schnitzler's greatest novellas—Dying, Flight into Darkness, and Fräulein Else. They reveal the depths of his psychological and moral understanding of life as well as the masterful storytelling techniques that immerse the reader into the very center of his characters' thoughts and emotions. Acknowledged masterpieces all, these novellas span Schnitzler's entire career from 1895 to 1931. They testify to his stature as depth psychologist, a doctor-writer fascinated by illness and very much at home in what Susan Sontag has called "the country of the sick." In all these novellas, Schnitzler uses point of view, interior monologue, and stream of consciousness in a radically modern way reminiscent of Joyce and Proust, only earlier.
1926. 163 pages. The dream-like events are rendered more frighteningly real through Schnitzler's powerfully detailed descriptions, as little by little Fridolin gives in to the demands of the secret celebrants. Do these represent real acts, or is the very fact that he imagines them enough to symbolize his moral decay? Schnitzler gives no answer, but Fridolin himself comes to realize that No dream is entirely a dream.

Dream Story, first published in 1926, was adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick called Eyes Wide Shut (1999), starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. Written entirely in the form of an interior monologue--the book highly influenced James Joyce in Ulysses--the novel recounts the moment-to-moment experiences of a swaggering Austrian military man.
