Bacchylides' songs did not survive the end of antiquity, but substantial portions of at least three books have been recovered from papyri found in Egypt. This 2004 book was the first commentary in English since R. C. Jebb's Bacchylides (1905). It aims to introduce the reader to two important areas of Greek choral lyric poetry in which Bacchylides was pre-eminent: songs in praise of individuals (victory odes 3–6 and 11, and enkomia frr. 20A–D), and songs composed for religious festivals (dithyrambs, procession songs, and paeans). Among the most attractive features of his style are the well-balanced formal structure of his poems, and his vivid narrative which is capable of creating scenes of high drama and deep passion.
Bacchylides (5th century BC) was an Ancient Greek lyric poet. Later Greeks included him in the canonical list of nine lyric poets, which included his uncle Simonides. His earliest odes can be approximately dated to 481 or 479 BC. He is known to have visited the court of Hiero I of Syracuse (478-467). Plutarch names Bacchylides in a list of writers who, after they had been banished from their native cities, were active and successful in literature. Quotations from Bacchylides, or references to him, occur in Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Strabo, Plutarch, Stobaeus, Athenaeus, Aulus Gellius, Zenobius, Hephaestion, Clement of Alexandria, and various grammarians or scholiasts. Bacchylides poetry is known for its use of picturesque detail, its simplicity, and its clarity.
These choral odes celebrate victories in the Pythian, Isthmian, Nemean and Olympic games and chronicle the classic gods and heroes, revealing to readers the spirit and world of Golden Age Greece. He celebrated the victories of athletes competing in foot races, horse races, boxing, wrestling, all-in fighting and the pentathlon, and his Odes are fascinating not only for their poetic qualities, but for what they tell us about the Games. Pindar praises the victor by comparing him to mythical heroes and the gods, but also reminds the athlete of his human limitations. The Odes contain versions of some of the best known Greek myths, such as Jason and the Argonauts, and Perseus and Medusa, and are a valuable source for insights on Greek religion and ethics. Pindar's startling use of language, including striking metaphors, bold syntax, and enigmatic expressions, makes reading his poetry a uniquely rewarding experience.
Anthony Verity's lucid translations stay as close as they can to the original Greek, without sacrificing readability. The text is complemented by a succinct introduction by Stephen Instone outlining the essential nature of Pindar's Odes as well as explaining the nature of the Games, the events, and the participants. Explanatory notes help the reader to navigate Pindar's sometimes compressed and allusive expressive technique.
About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe.
