Through discussions focusing upon class, camaraderie, violence, religion, trauma, and the body, this book considers these Irish soldiers within a cultural, social, and historical context. Central to this examination is the idea that the motives for enlistment and the experience of army labor and even combat was such that military service was perceived as work rather than a duty or vocation undertaken in support of any prevailing doctrines of patriotism or sacrifice. The men's Catholicism also shaped their aesthetic and philosophical responses to the war, even while the war conversely troubled their faith or confirmed their religious skepticism. The war writing of these men is located within both an Irish and a pan-European literary working class tradition, thereby permitting the texts to be viewed within a wider context than literature of the First World War, and from a perspective that goes beyond Ireland and Britain. These characteristics shape a perspective on the conflict very different from that of the canonical officer-writers, men such as Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, or Edmund Blunden, whose work is considered alongside those of the three Irish soldier-writers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49617855054097,"sku":"GOR013500377","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50366217879825,"sku":"CIN087805832XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52122595590417,"sku":"NLS9780878058327","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/087805832X.jpg?v=1750747110"},{"product_id":"plays-from-the-comtemporary-american-theater-book-brooks-mcnamara-9780451627537","title":"Plays from the Comtemporary American Theater","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50191674671377,"sku":"CIN0451627539A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50254775910673,"sku":"CIN0451627539G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50445398671633,"sku":"CIN0451627539VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0451627539.jpg?v=1750782291"},{"product_id":"merry-muldoons-and-the-brighteyes-affair-book-brooks-mcnamara-9780531054543","title":"The Merry Muldoons and the Brighteyes Affair","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50485141012753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50485141864721,"sku":"CIN0531054543G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53378905178385,"sku":"CIN0531054543VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0531054543.jpg?v=1750943877"},{"product_id":"new-york-concert-saloon-book-brooks-mcnamara-9780521036993","title":"The New York Concert Saloon","description":"In this book Brooks McNamara explores the world of the concert saloon in New York from the Civil War to the early years of the twentieth century. McNamara focuses on the theatrical aspects of the concert saloon and examines the sources of saloon shows, the changes in direction during the century, the performing spaces and equipment, as well as the employees and patrons. The great jubilees of recent years, including the ticker tape parades for the astronauts and championship sports teams and the annual May’s Thanksgiving Day parade, all drew on traditions established in the nineteenth century. Brooks McNamara sees these events as an extension of the traditional theatrical form. Although public celebrations take place outside of the playhouse, they are often loosely scripted, stage-managed, and performed by enormous casts—with an entire city as stage and auditorium. McNamara examines the evolution of the broad themes of popular pageantry, and the effects of the growing and changing population on these events. Through contemporary accounts and illustrations, readers can experience the excitement of Lafayette’s visit, the debut of Jenny Lind, and the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. McNamara also traces the decline of the golden age of jubilees, high-lighting such factors as rising costs to the City, increasing traffic congestion, and alternative popular entertainment. Readers will ask: Is our society too big and too complex for public performances of togetherness? And if so we, he have found a better way to enact our appreciation of what we value? Brooks McNamara is a professor in the Department of Performances Studies at New York University. He has written or edited a dozen books about theater and popular entertainment, including Step Right Up: A History of the American Medicine and The Shuberts on Broadway.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51331940548881,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51331943170321,"sku":"CIN0813523877G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0813523877.jpg?v=1761388708"},{"product_id":"new-york-concert-saloon-book-brooks-mcnamara-9780521814782","title":"The New York Concert Saloon","description":"In this book Brooks McNamara explores the world of the concert saloon in New York from the Civil War to the early years of the twentieth century.
