Drawn from three of the most significant social movements of our time--the labor, Black freedom, and antiwar movements--these engrossing interviews bring to life the experiences of Americans who acted upon their beliefs despite the price they paid for their dissent. In doing so, they--and the movements they were part of--helped shape the political and social landscape of the United States from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century. The majority of the voices in this book belong to everyday people--workers, priests, teachers, students--but more well-known figures such as Congressman John Lewis, Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), Abbie Hoffman, and Daniel Ellsberg are also included. There are firsthand accounts by leaders of the Industrial Workers of the World, active early in the century; Southern Tenant Farmers Union of the 1930s; Women's Strike for Peace, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; Berkeley's Free Speech Movement of the 1950s and 1960s; and the Hormel meatpackers' Local P-9 in the 1980s. Lively introductions by the authors contextualize these personal statements. Those who tell their stories in The Price of Dissent, and others like them, faced surveillance and disruption from police agencies, such as the FBI; brutalization by local police; local ordinances and court injunctions limiting protest; inquisitions into beliefs and associations by congressional committees; prosecution under laws that curbed dissent; denaturalization and deportation; and purges under government loyalty programs. Agree with them or not, by dissenting when it was unpopular or dangerous to do so, they insisted on exercising the precious American right of free expression and preserved it for a new century's dissenters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50352520003857,"sku":"CIN0520224027VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53521402691857,"sku":"NLS9780520224025","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0520224027.jpg?v=1750697838"},{"product_id":"we-will-be-heard-book-bud-schultz-9781858944418","title":"We Will be Heard","description":"Freedom of expression, a fundamental right in any democracy, has often been denied to Americans whose beliefs challenge the status quo. \"We Will Be Heard\" features over 90 stirring portraits and first-person accounts of Americans targeted for speaking out against government policies and actions. America's complex history of dissent has been made by both well-known and lesser-known individuals, such as Fred Korematsu, former Japanese internment-camp detainee, who campaigned for prisoner rights at Guantanamo; Stokely Carmichael, who fought for African American civil rights; and Janet Nocek, who resisted the FBI's controversial attempt to subpoena library records. At a time when constitutional rights have become one of the most hotly debated issues in the United States, \"We Will Be Heard\" reveals the remarkable courage and tenacity of more than 90 individuals who refused to be silenced.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50402391064849,"sku":"CIN1858944414G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51611976401169,"sku":"GOR006128234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51738746519825,"sku":"CIN1858944414VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1858944414.jpg?v=1751281350"},{"product_id":"it-did-happen-here-book-bud-schultz-9780520071971","title":"It Did Happen Here","description":"In this moving book, two skilled oral historians collect the words of Americans who have been victims of political repression in their own country.
