The UK General Election is just one of many prompts for analysis about the collective challenges we face and how best to address them. In these key moments, social scientists play an important role as part of wider multidisciplinary efforts to identify effective, equitable and affordable policy solutions. This report provides a social science lens on eight contemporary UK policy challenges, to equip political parties and broader civil society with an understanding of the breadth of evidence that the social sciences can bring. Our contributors comprised a blend of academics and practitioners, including people who have served as ministers and as senior officials within government, resulting in a range of perspectives on policy challenges from different and sometimes competing standpoints. Whilst this report does not make specific policy recommendations, we have documented five overarching areas of consensus, from the expert contributions, for improving the intersections of evidence, practice and policy – which we encourage the UK Government to consider.            In setting cross-cutting missions, the UK Government will benefit from policymaking processes and infrastructures which incorporate a broad range of evidence in ways that are transparent and robust.           The new UK Government would benefit from a more joined-up approach to policymaking.           Greater attention to the evidence base underpinning controversial and contentious policy areas could lead to calmer and more reasoned deliberation.           There is still significant scope for policy innovation by drawing on successful practice from the devolved nations and regions.          Policy development and discourse should include adequate space and time for social and societal elements to be fully explored.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51435457806609,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51435457872145,"sku":"NGR9781036208097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1036208095.jpg?v=1750709432"},{"product_id":"business-of-people-book-campaign-for-social-science-9781473918825","title":"The Business of People","description":"Tackling infectious disease, understanding radicalisation, improving productivity, getting people to save for retirement and nearly all the issues facing the UK, this book outlines the size and structure of UK social science, how social science graduates are essential to the work of firms, government and the third sector.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52336282566929,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336283418897,"sku":"NLS9781473918825","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781473918825.jpg?v=1758162823"},{"product_id":"positive-prospects-book-campaign-for-social-science-9781526461216","title":"Positive Prospects","description":"Almost four in ten graduates studied one of the social sciences. Where do they go to work? How do their employment and earnings compare to those who graduate from other areas? What makes a difference to their employment chances?      Positive Prospects provides a brief description of employment after graduation for those who study a wide range of social science subjects, using up-to-date information. The report gathers evidence from many sources about longer-term prospects and the backgrounds of ‘world leaders’.  It shows that there is variation between those graduating from different social science disciplines, as there is with so-called STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) graduates. Positive Prospects takes a look at the effect of graduating from different types of university, while observing that this reflects a great many factors such as students’ backgrounds and where they live and study.     One clear theme is that having number and data skills – either from secondary school or as part of undergraduate study – is likely to give individuals of every discipline a wider range of choices about work, meaning they are likely to earn more. Needless to say number and data skills are not the only things that matter, nor do all social science students need the same skill level. But the Campaign for Social Science has long believed that we need more people with conceptual social science skills and knowledge combined with some number and data skills – Positive Prospects shows that this combination has clear benefits.     The Campaign has also prepared summaries aimed specifically at undergraduates, schools, and school students.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52692395917585,"sku":"NLS9781526461216","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781526461216.jpg?v=1762341821"},{"product_id":"contemporary-relevance-of-the-social-sciences-book-campaign-for-social-science-9781036241445","title":"The Contemporary Relevance of the Social Sciences","description":"The social sciences play an essential role in harnessing the many opportunities and mitigating the numerous and varied challenges we face in our contemporary human world.
