This is the first book to document the work of this extraordinary artist, who exploded on the international art scene in 1997 after working for some 20 years little known outside of his native South Africa. The images in Kentridge's films depict political realities, expressed in terms of individual human suffering. They are patiently made up of dozens of drawings, often made from the erasure as well as the addition of lines and forms. A week's drawing can give rise to just 40 seconds of animation. Socio-political traumas such as apartheid and the Holocaust are enigmatically narrated through his melancholy, tormented images. Like some of the Expressionists who also relied on strong draughtsmanship, such as Max Backman and Kathe Kollwitz, Kentridge presents politically engaged art via depictions of the personal. This invaluable book is the first extensive monograph available on his work. American curator and critic Dan Cameron surveys Kentridge's work withing the context of politicized art practice while analysing the formal innovations of his animation techniques. European art critic and curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev discusses with the artist the political and philosophical dimensions of his relationship to drawing. Booker Prize-winning South African novelist J. M. Coetzee focusses on the artist's animated film History of the Main Complaint (1996) as a pivotal point in the development of Kentridge's best-known characters Soho Eckstein and Felix Teitlebaum. The Artist's Choice selection is an extract from Confessions of Zeno (1923) by Italo Svevo, which reflects the autobiographical content of the artist's work. Kentridge's writings span meditations on the process of drawing, the political situation in South Africa and traditions of representation upon which he has drawn, ranging from Goya and Hogarth to Beckmann and Eisenstein.
The definitive overview and anthology of the artworks and writings associated with Arte Povera, the influential art movement that explored the relation between art and life, made manifest through natural materials and human artifacts, and experienced through the body
Edited by one of the world's foremost authorities on the subject, Arte Povera is the most complete overview of this movement ever published.
On Curating 2, Carolee Thea’s new volume of interviews with 14 of today’s leading curators, explores the lively system of art biennials that is thriving around the world – particularly outside Europe and America. Spawned by their more formal Western predecessors and motivated by the forces of history and politics, the newer incarnations of the biennial often occur in the cities of the postcolonial world and the Global South, as well as countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. The new generation of curators who are organizing these surprisingly provocative and experimental exhibitions hail from cities as diverse as Bogotá, Dakar, Havana, Jakarta, Jerusalem, Lagos, Mumbai, Seoul and Zagreb, and they are the subjects of the interviews collected in this book. On Curating II includes 70 colour illustrations of relevant works by El Anatsui, Boris Groys, Cai Guo-Qiang, Fiona Hall, Mona Hatoum, Pablo Helguera, Emily Jacir, Michael Joo, Paul McCarthy, Ana Mendieta, Zanele Muholi, Issa Samb, Do Ho Suh and Rirkrit Tiravanija, among many others.
Wael Shawky (Alexandria, Egypt, 1971) is one of the most fascinating contemporary Arab artists. He investigates history, its interpretations, and the ways in which the past influences the present. These works, narrated from an Arab point of view, shed new light on the roots of some of the major cultural and sociopolitical crises of today. Published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, this catalogue includes a new artist's project consisting of drawings realized in dialog with Heinrich von Kleist's essay "On the Marionette Theater" (1810), as well as new critical essays by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Laura U. Marks and a conversation between Marcella Beccaria and the artist. Together with archival materials and works related to Shawky's film series Cabaret Crusades , the catalog presents for the first time a scholarly exhibition chronology up to the present. The anthology section includes texts and essays by Hoor Al-Qasimi, Lance M. Fung, Cesar Garcia, Abdellah Karroum, Hassan Khan, Doris Krystof, Ansgar Lorenz, Denize Marray, Jessica Morgan, Hans Ulrich Obrist, November Paynter, Adriano Pedrosa, Susanne Pfeffer, Sarah Rifky, Jacques Sapiega, Anna Smolak, Gilane Tawadros, Pier Luigi Tazzi, and Judith Wielander, in addition to those of the artist and the curators.
The volume examines the painting research, spanning about four decades, conducted by Renato Guttuso. He was a figure in the forefront of Italian art from the late-20th century and an absolutely prominent player in the setting of fervent debates enlivening that period. This volume has gathered together a representative sample of the works that best illustrate the artist's will to provide shape and substance to an art form of civil commitment: from Fucilazione in campagna (Execution by Gunshot in the Countryside, 1938) to the drawings of Gott mit Uns (God with Us, 1944); then continuing during the 1960s with Documentario sul Vietnam (Documentary on Vietnam, 1965) and Giovani innamorati (Young Lovers, 1968), the symbol of equal, revolutionary love; and, later, with Funerali di Togliatti (Funeral of Togliatti, 1972) that is a compendium of the history of struggles and hopes of a population, together with the reasons behind the political activism of a man and of an artist. In close proximity with this production, the volume also proposes traditional painting subjects and a precious collection of hardly-known works - which are in some cases absolutely unprecedented.
By analysing the different colour theories that gradually took shape in the turbulent socio-political context that characterised the 20th century, Emotions of Color in Art reflects on a perspective that considers light, its vibrations and the world of emotions, while challenging the standardisation of the use of colour in the modern age (synthetic colours) and the digital era (RGB colours offered by various online palettes), a levelling that considerably reduces our ability to distinguish colours in the real world.

The works by visual artist and filmmaker Hito Steyerl (Munich, 1966), one of the most influential cultural figures of our time.

Steyerl's works are critical reflections on the digital and contemporary age and focus on the pervasive role of technology and the circulation of images in the globalized world.
