Siringo had settled down to store-keeping in Caldwell, Kansas, when a blind phrenologist, traveling through, took the measure of his mule head and told him that he was cut out for detective work. Thereupon, Siringo joined the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1886. A Cowboy Detective chronicles his twenty-two years as an undercover operative in wilder parts of the West, where he rode with the lawless, using more stratagems and guises than Sherlock Holmes to bring them to justice and escaping violent death more often than Dick Tracy. He survived the labor riots at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1892 (his testimony helped convict eighteen union leaders), hounded moonshiners in the Appalachians, and chased Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch. Once described as a small wiry man, cold and steady as a rock and born without fear, Charlie Siringo became a favorite of high-ups in the Pinkerton organization. Nevertheless, the Pinkertons, ever sensitive to criticism, went to court to block publication of Siringo's book. Frank Morn, in his introduction to this Bison Books edition, discusses the changes that resulted from two years of litigation. Finally published in 1912 without Pinkerton in the title or the text, A Cowboy Detective has Siringo working for the Dickensen Detective Agency and meeting up with the likes of Tim Corn, whom every western buff will recognize. The deeper truth of Siringo's book remains. As J. Frank Dobie wrote, His cowboys and gunmen were not of Hollywood and folklore. He was an honest reporter. Frank Morn is a professor of criminal justice at Illinois State University and author of The Eye That Never Sleeps: A History of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency (1982).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49506191999249,"sku":"GOR009899980","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49993878864145,"sku":"CIN0803291892G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50275864281361,"sku":"CIN0803291892VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007495995665,"sku":"NIN9780803291898","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52847373648145,"sku":"GOR009451839","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0803291892.jpg?v=1761388890"},{"product_id":"texas-cowboy-book-charles-a-siringo-9781613824511","title":"A Texas Cowboy","description":"After a nomadic childhood, Charles Siringo signed on as a teenage cowboy for the noted Texas cattle king, Shanghai Pierce, and began a life that embraced all the hard work, excitement, and adventure readers today associate with the cowboy era. Siringo was born in Matagorda County, Texas to an Irish immigrant mother and an Italian immigrant father from Piedmont. He attended public school until reaching the age of 15, when he started working on local ranches as a cowboy. After taking part in several cattle drives, Siringo stopped herding to settle down, get married (1884), and open a merchant business in Caldwell, Kansas. He began writing a book, entitled A Texas Cowboy: or Fifteen Years on the Hurricane Deck of a Spanish Pony. A year later, it was published, to wide acclaim, and became one of the first true looks into life as a cowboy written by someone who had actually lived the life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51065009209617,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51065011372305,"sku":"NIN9781981427574","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1981427570.jpg?v=1751315825"},{"product_id":"cowboy-detective-book-charles-a-siringo-9780548998663","title":"A Cowboy Detective","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51134898995473,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51134901190929,"sku":"NIN9780548998663","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0548998663.jpg?v=1751007712"},{"product_id":"texas-cowboy-book-charles-a-siringo-9783742811271","title":"A Texas Cowboy","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51188530938129,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51188531396881,"sku":"NIN9783742811271","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585892938001,"sku":"NLS9783742811271","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3742811274.jpg?v=1750903207"},{"product_id":"history-of-billy-the-kid-book-charles-a-siringo-9788027334384","title":"History of 'Billy the Kid'","description":"In History of 'Billy the Kid, ' Charles A. A year later, it was published, to wide acclaim, and became one of the first true looks into life as a cowboy written by someone who had actually lived the life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51639671259409,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51639671488785,"sku":"NIN9781518705809","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1518705804.jpg?v=1751022021"},{"product_id":"riata-and-spurs-book-charles-a-siringo-9781494070038","title":"Riata and Spurs","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51673486655761,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51673486885137,"sku":"NIN9781494070038","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1494070030.jpg?v=1751339353"},{"product_id":"les-miserables-volume-3-marius-edition1-book-charles-a-siringo-9789357976121","title":"Les Misérables Volume 3: Marius (Edition1)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52406872801553,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52406873358609,"sku":"NLS9789357976121","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789357976121.jpg?v=1758770659"},{"product_id":"cowboy-detective-book-charles-a-siringo-9781015574328","title":"A Cowboy Detective","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52742624346385,"sku":"NIN9781015574328","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781015574328.jpg?v=1763492354"},{"product_id":"song-companion-of-a-lone-star-cowboy-book-charles-a-siringo-9781015956742","title":"The Song Companion Of A Lone Star Cowboy","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52742804963601,"sku":"NIN9781015956742","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781015956742.jpg?v=1763493012"},{"product_id":"texas-cow-boy-or-fifteen-years-on-the-hurricane-deck-of-a-spanish-pony-book-charles-a-siringo-9781016742931","title":"A Texas Cow Boy, Or, Fifteen Years On The Hurricane Deck Of A Spanish Pony","description":"After a nomadic childhood, Charles Siringo signed on as a teenage cowboy for the noted Texas cattle king, Shanghai Pierce, and began a life that embraced all the hard work, excitement, and adventure readers today associate with the cowboy era.
