Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - One of the best things in the world to be is a boy; it requires no experience, though it needs some practice to be a good one. The disadvantage of the position is that it does not last long enough; it is soon over; just as you get used to being a boy, you have to be something else, with a good deal more work to do and not half so much fun. And yet every boy is anxious to be a man, and is very uneasy with the restrictions that are put upon him as a boy. Good fun as it is to yoke up the calves and play work, there is not a boy on a farm but would rather drive a yoke of oxen at real work. What a glorious feeling it is, indeed, when a boy is for the first time given the long whip and permitted to drive the oxen, walking by their side, swinging the long lash, and shouting Gee, Buck Haw, Golden Whoa, Bright and all the rest of that remarkable language, until he is red in the face, and all the neighbors for half a mile are aware that something unusual is going on. If I were a boy, I am not sure but I would rather drive the oxen than have a birthday. The proudest day of my life was one day when I rode on the neap of the cart, and drove the oxen, all alone, with a load of apples to the cider-mill.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738898571537,"sku":"NGR9789390314201","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9390314208.jpg?v=1751427000"},{"product_id":"plot-summaries-of-shakespeare-s-plays-book-charles-dudley-warner-9781499264784","title":"Plot Summaries of Shakespeare's Plays","description":"Originally published in 1910 in the larger Warner's Synopsis of Books, Ancient and Modern, this paperback edition summarizes the plots of all of Shakespeare's comedies, tragedies, and histories.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49796112613649,"sku":"CIN149926478XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/149926478X.jpg?v=1719418196"},{"product_id":"a-roundabout-journey-rare-book-charles-dudley-warner-1643196947iev","title":"A Roundabout Journey","description":"1883. It satirizes greed and political corruption in post-Civil War America in the era now referred to as the Gilded Age. Although not one of Twain's best-known works, it has appeared in more than one hundred editions since its original publication. Twain and Warner originally had planned to issue the novel with illustrations by Thomas Nast. The book is remarkable for two reasons--it is the only novel Twain wrote with a collaborator, and its title very quickly became synonymous with graft, materialism, and corruption in public life. The term gilded age, commonly given to the era, comes from the title of this book. Twain and Warner got the name from Shakespeare's King John (1595): To gild refined gold, to paint the lily... is wasteful and ridiculous excess. citation needed] Gilding gold, which would be to put gold on top of gold, is excessive and wasteful, characteristics of the age Twain and Warner wrote about in their novel. Another interpretation of the title, of course, is the contrast between an ideal Golden Age, and a less worthy Gilded Age, as gilding is only a thin layer of gold over baser metal, so the title now takes on a pejorative meaning as to the novel's time, events and people. The novel concerns the efforts of a poor rural Tennessee family to become affluent by selling the 75,000 acres (300 km2) of unimproved land acquired by their patriarch, Silas Si Hawkins, in a timely manner. After several adventures in Tennessee, the family fails to sell the land and Si Hawkins dies. The rest of the Hawkins story line focuses on their beautiful adopted daughter, Laura. In the early 1870s, she travels to Washington, D.C. to become a lobbyist. With a Senator's help, she enters Society and attempts to persuade Congressmen to require the federal government to purchase the land.....Charles Dudley Warner (September 12, 1829 - October 20, 1900) was an American essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today...Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 - April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51035331723537,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51035334279441,"sku":"NIN9781539944836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51860715503889,"sku":"CIN1539944832G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1539944832.jpg?v=1750926255"},{"product_id":"gilded-age-book-charles-dudley-warner-9781539945147","title":"The Gilded Age","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51035363442961,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51035366162705,"sku":"NIN9781539945147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1539945146.jpg?v=1750893514"},{"product_id":"gilded-age-book-charles-dudley-warner-9781539944973","title":"The Gilded Age","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51035521548561,"sku":"NIN9781539944973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1539944972.jpg?v=1750797587"},{"product_id":"library-of-the-world-s-best-literature-ancient-and-modern-vol-iii-forty-five-vol-book-charles-dudley-warner-9781605201900","title":"A Library of the World's Best Literature - Ancient and Modern - Vol. III (Forty-Five Volumes); Auerbach - Bancroft","description":"Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world.
