California began as a literary invention, a magic island, in a Spanish romance before conquistadors first visited the land. From early days to the present, the California dream of happiness in a land of new beginnings has been maintained by suppression of disturbing realities: above all, the destruction of native peoples; and by events and facts such as the tragedy of the Donner Party, the persistence of poverty and crime in the golden land, disturbing crimes such as the Black Dahlia; and pandemics and ecological disaster. This book explores a rich Gothic tradition that exposes the repressed past and imagines the fates awaiting a failed California.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742589886737,"sku":"NGR9781839983795","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51057836982545,"sku":"NIN9781839983795","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52455798964497,"sku":"NLS9781839983795","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1839983795.jpg?v=1750866080"},{"product_id":"american-gothic-book-charles-l-crow-9780631206521","title":"American Gothic","description":"This collection brings together, and sets into dialogue, Gothic works by a number of authors, men and women, black and white, which illuminate many of the deepest concerns and fears of nineteenth--century America.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50469594693905,"sku":"CIN0631206523A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50942188978449,"sku":"GOR009262828","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51797347172625,"sku":"GOR007137475","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52133714690321,"sku":"CIN0631206523G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631206523.jpg?v=1751360502"},{"product_id":"history-of-the-gothic-american-gothic-book-charles-l-crow-9780708320440","title":"History of the Gothic: American Gothic","description":"Defining the American gothic tradition both within the context of the major movements of intellectual history over the past three-hundred years, as well as within the issues critical to American culture, this comprehensive volume covers a diverse terrain of well-known American writers, from Poe to Faulkner to Toni Morrison and Cormac McCarthy. Division 86 was the catalyst for evolutionary changes in the conceptual employment of the squadron. The approved operational concept and force structure established reconnaissance as the primary mission of the divisional cavalry squadron while reducing its combat capabilities. The cavalry squadron is no longer a combined arms combat maneuver battalion capable of performing all combat related missions. Analysis reveals divisional cavalry squadrons in World War I performed combat related missions the majority of the time, while spending only three percent of their effort on reconnaissance. Studies, tests, and National Training Center experience has revealed the viability of conducting reconnaissance by stealth. Although the new squadron is presently being fielded, doctrine for the employment of the squadron is inadequate, or nonexistent. Despite the fact that tanks are no longer found within the squadron, judicious employment of M3 CFV's and stealth techniques permit accomplishment of the reconnaissance mission. The study concludes that the US Army has never adequately employed the modern divisional cavalry squadron in reconnaissance. Even without organic tanks, the J-series cavalry squadron is capable of conducting reconnaissance by stealth in support of a counterattack.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51224053580049,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51224055546129,"sku":"NIN9781288280957","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1288280955.jpg?v=1766570756"},{"product_id":"tactical-and-operational-depth-book-charles-l-crow-9781288323357","title":"Tactical and Operational Depth","description":"This study analyzes and defines tactical and operational depth. Simply stated, tactical depth is defined as the area occupied by defending units whose continued occupation maintains the integrity of the defense and denies the attacker the opportunity to destroy the mass of defending forces by maneuver, while operational depth is the area in which maneuver is achieved and if gained by the attacker provides the opportunity to destroy the defender without engaging the majority of defenses. Historical analyzes based on the study of the Battle of Gazal, battle for the Kerch peninsula, and the Battle of Kursk revealed that tactical and operational depth are not related to the size of units or any specific depth, but are dependent on missions, objectives, employment of units, locations of reserves, and the perspective in which these are viewed. Units occupying tactical depth in the battles studied range in size from brigade to army. In the term of size, tactical depth varied from five to sixty kilometers. Units defending in the tactical depth had missions related to denying the attacker the ability to maneuver, while units positioned in the operational depth were oriented on destroying units that had penetrated the tactical depth. The study concludes that tactical and operational depth can be summed up in two words, denial and opportunity. The importance in understanding the difference in the two depths lies in the fact that when the attacker crosses the threshold between tactical and operational depth, a decision point has been reached. The attacker must decide how to respond to the opportunity presented to him, while the defender must adequately respond or face total destruction.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51224119738641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51224121835793,"sku":"NIN9781288323357","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1288323352.jpg?v=1751271536"},{"product_id":"nineteenth-century-southern-gothic-short-fiction-book-charles-l-crow-9781785273872","title":"Nineteenth-Century Southern Gothic Short Fiction","description":"The twelve Gothic tales of this collection span the nineteenth-century South and are from some of the most famous writers of the age, such as Edgar Allan Poe, to more recently rediscovered and now celebrated writers such as Kate Chopin and Charles Chesnutt, to the completely and unfairly obscure E. It centers on the question of how effective was the Red Army in employing armored units during this momentous battle. Events that shaped the battle and a brief comparison of forces set the stage. A discussion of the actual battle on the Central and Voronezh Fronts is followed by an analysis of the effectiveness of the employment of the operational armored units. The battle analysis methodology as promulgated by the Combat Studies Institute at the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, established the guidelines for the study. Both Western and Soviet sources were utilized. Objectivity and compatibility of all available source material were of paramount importance in establishing the validity and accuracy of various accounts. The study concludes the Soviets prepared superbly for the operational battle; however, execution fell short of expectations. Because this was the first time the Soviets used tank armies in battle, an analysis of Kursk serves as an excellent catalyst for subsequent examination of present Soviet defensive doctrine and the use of tank armies in defense.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53365913714961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53365914140945,"sku":"NIN9781249283898","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249283898.jpg?v=1775078948"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-charles-l-crow.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
