Includes the plays The Body of a Woman as a battlefield in the Bosnian war by Matei Visniec, Cordon by Nebojsa Romcevic, When I want to whistle, I whistle... by Andreea Valean, Soap Opera by Gyoergy Spiro The title of this volume alludes to the history of political double-dealing in a troubled region within southern Europe, surrounded by the Adriatic, Aegean and Black Seas. G.B. Shaw wrote Arms and The Man about a small Balkan plot in the 19th century. It's in this tradition, rather than in a geographical sense that we use the title Balkan Plots. The plays in this volume are dramatic works which have emerged from, or which take as their subject matter, the struggle of individuals within societies affected by recent political upheaval. The writers explore aspects of freedom and rebellion, ethnicity and discrimination, loyalty and betrayal in situations where conventional attitudes and beliefs are severely tested. In some plays, the conflict is between traditional socialist attitudes and western capitalism. In others, the values and beliefs of the younger generation collide with and challenge those of the older generation. Within each of the plays, the way in which the personal and the political interacts, is very much in evidence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49643633443089,"sku":"GOR005135246","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52592500736273,"sku":"NLS9780953675739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0953675734.jpg?v=1751456383"},{"product_id":"southeast-asian-plays-book-cheryl-robson-9781906582869","title":"Southeast Asian Plays","description":"A collection of plays in English by new and established writers from seven countries in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia. The plays cover topics as diverse as the global financial crisis, religious faith, the sex trade, corruption and exploitation, Southeast Asian Plays provides a fresh and unique snapshot of the rich variety of performance work that in many cases is only beginning to be written down, and insight into the differing concerns of those living in a part of the world which is experiencing profound change.Much of the new work in this region remains unknown beyond the borders of language. This volume helps to encourage the cultural exchange between ASEAN countries. This is the first collection of Southeast Asian play texts to prioritise material that other countries (including SEA) might be interested in performing. The aim is to introduce not only the writers but also the cultures that produced them.It is exciting to discover the other forms of play-making that exist in this region, and it is no accident that this collection includes many plays by women - a sign of the equity that has emerged as a feature of nations that are growing in pride, in industry, investment and in tourism, in innovation and in cultural originality.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736097136913,"sku":"NGR9781906582869","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51200915767569,"sku":"NIN9781906582869","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52511682068753,"sku":"GOR014545758","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1906582866.jpg?v=1751314177"},{"product_id":"seven-plays-by-women-book-cheryl-robson-9780951587713","title":"Seven Plays By Women","description":"Winner of The Raymond Williams Prize Plays by Ayshe Raif, Cheryl Robson, April De Angelis, Nina Rapi, Eva Lewin, Jan Rupee, Jean Abbott.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50418234360081,"sku":"GOR002164147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53399042949393,"sku":"GOR004831164","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0951587714.jpg?v=1750705196"},{"product_id":"plays-by-mediterranean-women-book-cheryl-robson-9780951587737","title":"Plays by Mediterranean Women","description":"The Plays Libration by Lluisa Cunill (Spain): A mysterious, intense and comic two-hander about two women who meet in a city park at night.
