{"title":"Chong Sik Lee","description":null,"products":[{"product_id":"park-chung-hee-book-chong-sik-lee-9780615560281","title":"Park Chung-Hee","description":"How do we explain Park Chung-Hee's determination to push through the coup d' tat in 1961 and the modernization programs afterward? How did his family's poverty and his experiences in Manchuria, Japan, and China affect his later career as South Korea's leader? How would he have answered his critics' charge that he was a pro-Japanese collaborator and a Communist renegade? How can we explain his harsh suppression of domestic dissidents and opponents? In trying to answer these and other questions, Lee presents a kaleidoscopic history of modern Korea from the 1890s to the 1960s. Like Park, the author also grew up under Japanese rule and lived in Manchuria, where Park spent more than three years. This meticulously researched book uses Korean, Japanese, and English sources to put Park's life into historical context.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50356525105425,"sku":"CIN0615560288G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51004863316241,"sku":"NIN9780615560281","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52473707888913,"sku":"GOR014534265","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0615560288.jpg?v=1750976887"},{"product_id":"park-chung-hee-book-chong-sik-lee-9781475117042","title":"Park Chung-Hee","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51028687585553,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51028690141457,"sku":"NIN9781475117042","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1475117043.jpg?v=1750715640"},{"product_id":"north-korea-book-chong-sik-lee-9781523725755","title":"North Korea","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52750332985617,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52750333444369,"sku":"NIN9781523725755","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781523725755.jpg?v=1763552720"},{"product_id":"korea-briefing-1990-book-chong-sik-lee-9780367015558","title":"Korea Briefing, 1990","description":"This book initiates a series of comprehensive annual reviews of issues and events in the Republic of Korea and on the peninsula as a whole in 1990. Lee interrogates the central question of why the CCP succeeded in some periods and regions but faltered in others, situating Manchuria as a critical site where the interplay of nationalism, socio-economic reform, and international politics decisively shaped Communist strategy. He argues that in Manchuria, far more than in China proper, the anti-Japanese struggle became the overriding theme that enabled the CCP to attract peasant support and build guerrilla forces. In contrast, early attempts to organize the urban proletariat or push radical socio-economic reforms not only failed to generate mass support but left long-lasting adverse effects on the Party’s credibility. At the same time, Lee demonstrates that CCP strategy in Manchuria cannot be understood apart from Soviet interests and the directives of the Comintern. Local cadres consistently pressed for prioritizing anti-Japanese resistance, but the Party center, constrained by Moscow’s diplomatic calculations, often delayed or countermanded such efforts. Drawing on Party documents, Comintern directives, and Japanese sources, Lee shows how the shifting Soviet-Japanese relationship repeatedly reshaped CCP priorities—first restricting, then later encouraging, united front strategies in Manchuria. The book also probes the paradox that while nationalist mobilization brought the CCP to its peak influence in the region, by 1941 its guerrilla movement had been eradicated, raising larger questions about the limits of resistance under imperial occupation. For scholars of modern Chinese history, communism, and international relations, Lee’s study provides an essential corrective to interpretations that downplay the decisive role of Soviet policy, while offering a nuanced account of how nationalism, ideology, and geopolitics converged in one of the most turbulent theaters of the Chinese Revolution.
