As in 1941, they made significant advances, particularly on the southern half of the front, penetrating to the River Volga and the city of Stalingrad. In one of the defining decisions of the World War 2, Hitler decided, rather than bypass the city and rely upon its ultimate capitulation as supplies dried up, to try and take Stalingrad from the outset. The battle for Stalingrad was undoubtedly one of the turning points in the war. Before the German defeat there and at the battle of El Alamein, they had never been beaten. After these defeats, the Germans never again achieved a significant victory. Whilst the land battle for Stalingrad is well known, the air battle fought by the Luftwaffe and the Soviet air force is less well documented but was very important in determining the ultimate fate of the city and the opposing combatants. This book, written by an authority on the air war on the Eastern Front, centres around the huge air battles which took place over Stalingrad between August and November 1942 and the subsequent airlift operation in the winter of 1942/43 intended to relieve the German Sixth Army which was by then trapped in Stalingrad. It also covers the air war during the Russian counter-offensive in early 1943 where the Luftwaffe played a major role in saving the whole German Eastern Front (and thus the whole German war effort) from collapsing. This is an aspect of the war in the East has previously not been written about in such depth. The strength of the author's writing lies in its detail and his ability to tell the story from the viewpoint of both sides. The book contains much unique eye-witness material and the text is accompanied by a large number of rare and previously unpublished photographs, biographical inserts on some of the leading figures in the struggle, data tables, technical assessments and appendices. This is the second in a new series by Christer Bergström covering the major phases of the air war in this theatre. The first of these, Barbarossa, The Air Battle July-December 1941, (ISBN: 978 1 85780 270 2) is scheduled for publication in the Spring of 2007. These books will be required reading for all historians of the Luftwaffe during World War 2 in general and those with a specific interest on the Eastern Front in particular.
In June 1941, one of the pivotal and defining moments of World War 2 occurred as the German forces swept eastwards from their lines in Poland and Central Europe, to take on the might of Soviet Russia. Over the next six months , Axis forces travelled ever eastwards, surrounding Leningrad and reaching the very gates of Moscow itself, before the harsh and unremitting Russian winter set in and the battle for life and death in the field became, for both sides, a war of survival against the elements.Although Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of Russia, is widely perceived as a great land offensive, equally important was the aerial supremacy that the Luftwaffe achieved over the front line during the early phases of the campaign. Without the elimination of the threat posed by the Soviet air force, it would have been impossible for the army to have made the rapid advances during the summer and autumn of 1941.This book, written by a recognised authority on the air war over the Eastern Front, provides an informed, balanced and detailed account of the massive aerial campaign fought in the skies over the Soviet Union following the launch of Operation Barbarossa. Drawing on both Russian and German sources, the strength of the author's writing lies in its detail, his ability to tell the story from the viewpoints of both sides and to put events in both their strategic and tactical contexts. There is also much unique eye-witness material and the text will be accompanied by a large number of rare and previously unpublished photographs; biographical studies of the major players in the conflict; data tables; technical assessments and appendices.Compiled by one of the world's leading experts on the air war over the Eastern Front, Barbarossa: The Air Battle is the first in a series of books to cover the major phases of World War 2, in this theatre of operations. The attack came through the Ardennes, the hilly and forested area in eastern Belgium and Luxembourg that the Allies had considered a quiet sector. Instead, for the second time in the war, the Germans used it as a stealthy avenue of approach for their panzers.Much of U.S. First Army was overrun, and thousands of prisoners were taken as the Germans forged a 50-mile bulge into the Allied front. But in one small town, Bastogne, American paratroopers, together with remnants of tank units, offered dogged resistance. Meanwhile the rest of Eisenhower s broad front strategy came to a halt as Patton, from the south, and Hodges, from the north, converged on the enemy incursion. Yet it would take an epic, six-week-long winter battle, the bloodiest in the history of the U.S. Army, before the Germans were finally pushed back.Christer Bergstrom has interviewed veterans, gone through huge amounts of archive material, and performed on-the-spot research in the area. The result is a large amount of previously unpublished material and new findings, including reevaluations of tank and personnel casualties and the most accurate picture yet of what really transpired. The Ardennes Offensive has often been described from the American point of view; however, this balanced book devotes equal attention to the perspectives of both sides. With nearly 400 photos, numerous maps, and 32 superb color profiles of combat vehicles and aircraft, it provides perhaps the most comprehensive look at the battle yet published.REVIEWS The German counteroffensive in the Ardennes- known as the Battle of the Bulge -with Bergstrom re-examining offical accounts to provide the true story of what happened The Bookseller ...so richly illustrated...text is illuminated by a plethora of maps and nearly 400 photos. Highlights include 32 fantastic full color profiles of combat aircraft and vehicles that would be a boon to model makers and diorama builders. The comprehensive book amounting to 506 or so pages delivers what appears to be a highly accurate analysis of what really happened during the battle of the bulge.Toy Soldier and Model Figure Magazine. For a book to live up to its hype, it has to be amazing. Christer Bergstrom's book on the Battle of the Bulge is one such book. If you are a military historian or a wargamer, this book is perfect for you. I have never seen so much detail in a one volume study before. Besides a full history of the campaign, you are treated to wargamer-friendly maps and a full order of battle. Dozens of photos enhance the well-translated text. The account of the battle is detailed, but lucid. Tables and numbers tell their story also, along with full color plates of the tanks and aircraft that came to grips in the Belgian countryside of 1944. For example, you can see the losses by division AND tank type for all of the Nazi Army Group B from December 16 until the 31st.
