Radical utopias and pragmatic solutions for life and culture were proposed, modernism embraced and dramatically rejected. Britain in the same period can seem comparatively stable, a nation wedded to established cultural forms in the face of social change. Yet throughout the period, there remained a lively interchange between the two countries. This collection of essays, by scholars working between Britain and Germany, elsewhere in Europe and in North America, looks anew at the complicated cultural relationship between Britain and Germany in the years between 1919 and 1955. It sets out to explore the connections between the two countries during this time in the fields of fine art and arts institutions, architecture, design and craft, photography, art history and criticism. It explores how practitioners in the two countries learned from and influenced each other, seeking to highlight the relevance of these interchanges today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52410311278865,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52410311803153,"sku":"NLS9781789973914","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781789973914.jpg?v=1758777475"},{"product_id":"otto-dix-and-weimar-media-culture-book-anne-reimers-9781800791237","title":"Otto Dix and Weimar Media Culture","description":"Otto Dix (1891-1969) was a leading figure of the Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity, movement in painting in 1920s Germany. His works encompassing and transcending painting, sculpture, photography and installation are epic in both scale and subject-matter; in them Kiefer wrestles with the darkness of German history, unearthing the taboos that underlie the collective past and interweaving them with Teutonic mythology, cosmology and meditations on the nature of belief. This volume, accompanying a major retrospective of Kiefers works at the Royal Academy and including a number of new works especially made for the exhibition, explores the themes that run through Kiefers oeuvre, from the complex relationship between art and spirituality to the influence of German woodcuts and folklore. An essay by the internation - ally renowned historian Simon Schama also considers the role of the artist in the twenty-first century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52457026126097,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52457026257169,"sku":"GOR009556213","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781907533792.jpg?v=1759399814"},{"product_id":"disorders-at-the-borders-book-matt-wates-9781800791794","title":"Disorders at the Borders","description":"Although Anselm Kiefer's work is routinely compared with the Gesamtkunstwerk, the 'total work of art' pioneered by Richard Wagner, this book investigates the highly ambivalent relationship between these two artists. She deftly traces how each threaded together archival treasures and different forms of three-dimensional montage in their homes and workspaces to create living art in difficult times.»   (Maud Lavin, Professor Emerita, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and author of Cut with the Kitchen Knife: The Weimar Photomontages of Hannah Höch)      «Focusing on Hannah Höch’s archive (rather than her artworks) and her post-Second World War activities (rather than the Dada period), Stina Barchan bypasses conventional approaches to the artist and compellingly argues that Höch’s holistic approach to art and life in this period was among the most fundamentally subversive and radical of her career.»   (Adrian Sudhalter, author of Dadaglobe Reconstructed)      The archive of the German artist Hannah Höch (1889–1978) has long been an important source of material for historians researching the interwar avant-garde and artists associated with Berlin Dada. This book explores Höch’s practices of organisation when assembling the documents in her house outside Berlin from 1939 until her death. Through extensive research, the author argues that Höch’s archive should be considered not just a collection of documents but a work in its own right, intimately connected with the artist’s daily life. Noting the importance of understanding the mechanisms of this work, the book suggests that Höch took charge of both preserving and exploring the possibilities of Dada long after the group had been officially dissolved.      The file that Höch assembled on her friend, the artist Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948), plays an important part in the book, its content revealing how domestic habits infused both artists’ practices. Juxtaposing Höch’s archive and Schwitters’s Merzbau, the author argues for an interactive movement between the two that has fundamental implications for how we understand both artists’ oeuvres.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52620353732881,"sku":"NLS9781800798892","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800798892.jpg?v=1761538788"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-christian-weikop.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
