Such paintings, created quickly to capture subtle atmospheric effects and the fleeting play of light, played a vital role in the visual training of generations of European artists. The pictures were not conceived of as finished works of art, were rarely if ever exhibited during the artists’ lifetimes, and were often kept in the studio for later consultation. This beautiful book presents the Gere collection, which today numbers some 70 works. These include paintings by Valenciennes, Frederic, Lord Leighton, and Thomas Jones, as well as by less well-known artists such as Gilles Closson and Simon Denis. While the majority were painted in Italy, there are also works by British, French, Italian, German, Belgian, and Scandinavian artists. These intimate and compelling documents of artists at work form what is perhaps the most comprehensive private collection of its kind. A persistent fascination with struggle permeates Homer’s art—from emblematic images of the Civil War and Reconstruction to dazzling tropical works and monumental marines—and reveals his lifelong engagement with the charged subjects of race, nature, and the environment.     This publication illuminates Homer’s preoccupation with the complex social and political issues of his era—war, slavery, imperialism—as well as his broader concerns with the fragility of human life and dominance of nature. These powerful themes are present in his earliest Civil War and Reconstruction paintings, which explore the effect of the conflict on the landscape, soldiers, and the formerly enslaved. They continue through his later images of rural life, dramatic rescues, and hunting—paintings that grapple with the often uneasy relationship between humans and the natural world. Toward the end of his life, human figures were reduced to tiny, irrelevant presences, while the ocean acquired a pivotal role. In 1874, after his participation in the now - infamous first Impressionist Exhibition in Paris, Sisley enjoyed a stay in London. He painted lively studies of life and leisure along the River Thames - just as his artistic colleagues Monet and Pissarro were exploring similar themes along the River Seine. When Sisley returned to Britain in 1897, for personal reasons as well as artistic exploration, he was enthralled by the dramatic South Wales coastline. The pictures resulting from this trip were among the most boldly painted works he had ever produced. This book is a concise and generously illustrated account of Sisley's work in England and Wales, appealing to readers with an interest in art, particularly Impressionism, and British landscapes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49545729671441,"sku":"GOR003783362","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52851057164561,"sku":"GOR010298403","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53163352686865,"sku":"GOR004694491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857094131.jpg?v=1751451811"},{"product_id":"conversations-with-god-jan-matejko-s-copernicus-book-christopher-riopelle-9781857096699","title":"Conversations with God: Jan Matejko's Copernicus","description":"Two icons of Polish culture and history, an artist and an astronomer Largely unknown outside his homeland, Jan Matejko (1838–93) is widely regarded as the national painter of Poland, where he is revered for his huge minutely detailed depictions of key moments in the nation’s history. Focusing on Matejko’s masterpiece, Copernicus, this generously illustrated book introduces the artist to a wider public. His monumental painting celebrates the achievements of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543), whose heliocentric theory transformed our understanding of the universe. Rather than depicting Copernicus at the moment of his discovery, Matejko chose to paint him on a rooftop in his hometown of Frombork, discussing the matter with God. Copernicus was never excommunicated for challenging the authority of the Church; indeed, enlightened clerics of the day celebrated his breakthrough. Incorporating text, stark typography, and commercial logos, the artist’s multivalent images both portray and interrogate the contemporary world’s relentlessly packaged environment. By placing Ruscha’s celebrated Course of Empire—a ten-painting installation originally created for the 2005 Venice Biennale—in dialogue with Thomas Cole’s five-picture cycle The Course of Empire from the 1830s, this catalogue offers a fresh perspective on each of these disparate masterpieces. Unlike Cole’s grandiose vision of the rise and fall of classical civilization, Ruscha’s work comprises five black-and-white Los Angeles landscapes made in 1992 paired with color representations of the same sites as they appeared ten years later and draws attention to how often-overlooked changes in the evolving urban landscape are redolent of economic might and globalization or decline and stagnation. This richly illustrated book also examines the differences that climate, character, and political regimes have imposed on artistic practices. Distinct social and political situations in Norway and Switzerland yielded fundamental differences in the two countries' painting traditions. As Norway endured a long struggle for freedom, Switzerland remained proudly independent. While Norway was poor, isolated, and dependent for survival on its natural resources, the Swiss enjoyed prosperity, a cosmopolitan society, and prestige as an early center of industry. The authors examine how this was manifested in the landscape paintings of such prominent artists as Johan Christian Dahl, Thomas Fearnley, Peder Balke, and Alexandra Calame. Each painting is explored in depth, illuminating the parallels and differences between the artists’ techniques and creative ambitions. The first essay tells the story of the twelve-year gestation of Ingres’s Madame Moitessier, focusing on the role of drawings in the elaboration of the composition, and of the sitter herself in determining how she was to be presented. The second essay traces the development of Picasso’s Woman with a Book, among the most celebrated likenesses of the artist’s young lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter. In contrast to Ingres’s work, it was painted in just a day or two. The final essay explores, through these two works, the artists’ shared interest in the relationship between nude and clothed bodies, revealing the depth of Picasso’s engagement with Madame Moitessier, which motivates and animates Woman with a Book. At the time of his death, he was completing plans for an exhibition at the National Gallery, London, to include the first public showing of what turned out to be his final work. Based on Balzac's short story, The Unknown Masterpiece, it depicts three masters of painting—Poussin, Courbet, and Titian—contemplating a reclining female nude and reflecting on the meaning of art. As with much of Hamilton's late work, the image was generated by computer but over-painted by hand. Knowing he would not complete it, Hamilton decided to show three preparatory versions simultaneously. In addition, he selected thirty paintings tracing the development of his art, featuring single-point perspective and the depiction of interior spaces, the sacred imagery of the Italian Renaissance, and allusions to the art of Marcel Duchamp. The experience was so profound that he built his career painting isolated Arctic Circle seascapes. His pictures were originally rooted in the 19th-century romanticism of artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and his compatriot, Johan Christian Dahl. Later in his career Balke created improvised seascapes with roughly applied brushwork—sometimes using his hands, a technique that was prescient of early modern expressionism. His profile as an artist had fallen into obscurity outside of Norway, but now this book brings together a group of Balke’s pictures from collections in Europe and the United States, and introduces readers to a unique artist and personality whose works bridged 19th-century romanticism and early modern expressionism.   Published by National Gallery Company\/Distributed by Yale University Press Exhibition Schedule: Northern Norway Art Museum, Tromsø (06\/14\/14–10\/12\/14) National Gallery, London (11\/12\/14–04\/12\/15)","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49974287728913,"sku":"GOR007302159","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50681812779281,"sku":"GOR007781173","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857095820.jpg?v=1751455988"},{"product_id":"brush-with-nature-book-christopher-riopelle-9781857092530","title":"A Brush with Nature","description":"Beginning in the 1950s, John and Charlotte Gere pioneered the collecting of small-scale landscape oil sketches by 18th- and 19th-century artists working outdoors.
