Alegria and Flakoll, on the recommendation of Julio Cortazar, met Ramon, a leader in the Argentinian Revolutionary Workers' Party (PRT) and with his help were able to interview all the survivors of the commando team that carried out the bringing to justice of Somoza. Alegria and Flakoll then rewove these testimonies into a narrative that reads like a thriller, as well as giving a vivid picture of the political and social climate of the time. Enlivened by its colorful cast of characters, Death of Somoza is the definitive account of how Anastasio Somoza Debayle was brought to justice. This story is not an apology for terrorism, but rather the chronicle of a tyrannicide.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49612272828689,"sku":"GOR010737311","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50627716808977,"sku":"CIN1880684268VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51857954046225,"sku":"CIN1880684268G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1880684268.jpg?v=1763475470"},{"product_id":"they-won-t-take-me-alive-book-claribel-alegria-9780704340282","title":"They Won't Take Me Alive","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49633649950993,"sku":"GOR007927881","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50849741046033,"sku":"CIN0704340283VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51416136614161,"sku":"CIN0704340283G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0704340283.jpg?v=1751199597"},{"product_id":"ashes-of-izalco-book-claribel-alegria-9780915306848","title":"Ashes of Izalco","description":"Written in two voices, Ashes of Izalco is a collaborative novel by Claribel Alegrfa and Darwin Flakoll, a love story set against the events of 1932 when thirty thousand Indians and peasants were massacred in Izalco, El Salvador. She left her family’s Nicaraguan coffee plantation to spend her childhood in exile in El Salvador. Her writing of the 1950s and 1960s reflects the views of the “Committed Generation” of Central America, seeking social and political justice for its citizens. She shared the Casas de las Americas poetry prize in 1978 with Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli.  In 1979, when the Sandinistas overthrew the Somoza regime, she returned to Nicaragua to help it rebuild. While both countries claim her, she credits the 1980 assassination of Salvadoran archbishop Oscar Romero as the pivotal event of her revolutionary commitment.  Alegría’s mature work reflects her anger and sense of loss over the murdered and “disappeared” throughout Latin America. “Because of them I called myself a cemetery,” she notes. She praises women poets giving voice to the victims of state terror. Her major works include I Survive (1978), Flowers from the Volcano (1981), Sorrow (1999), and Casting Off(2003). In this volume, published in Madrid as Otredad in 2011, she separates her writing from her daily existence: “She who writes is the other one.”","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51010259386641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51010262270225,"sku":"NIN9780982696880","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0982696884.jpg?v=1757414016"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-claribel-alegria.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
