That is the question addressed in the Trinity Press edition of this classic text, which includes a new preface by the author. The issue is not so much how to interpret scripture as what to do with it once one has interpreted it. The book therefore explores not what theologians have said about scripture's authority for theology, but the sense in which scripture serves as authority in their actual practice of theology. It offers a set of brief case studies of theologians authorizing or proving a theological proposal by scripture, and based on these studies, an analysis of the concept of authority for theology implicit in them. Finally, it teases out of the cases implicit assumptions about what the concept of scripture means and why appeal ought to be made to it to prove theology. Kelsey has given us a book that deserves the serious attention not only of professional theologians but also of pastors and all those in the Christian community who understand their personal identity and the identity of their community to be shaped in some sense by scripture. Kelsey is Luther Weigle Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School and Yale Graduate School.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49545361096977,"sku":"GOR011125959","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50093244973329,"sku":"CIN1563382830G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52427514183953,"sku":"NLS9781563382833","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1563382830.jpg?v=1751632317"},{"product_id":"uses-of-scripture-in-recent-theology-book-david-h-kelsey-9780334017202","title":"Uses of Scripture in Recent Theology","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49605746819345,"sku":"GOR009339361","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51484499575057,"sku":"GOR002349329","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0334017203.jpg?v=1750877709"},{"product_id":"imagining-redemption-book-david-h-kelsey-9780664228897","title":"Imagining Redemption","description":"David Kelsey offers a groundbreaking discussion of Christian redemption by exploring the story of a series of horrendous events that befell a young boy and his family. David Kelsey expertly probes this complicated issue in his exhaustive and ambitious examination of theological anthropology. Divided into three parts, Kelsey's work posits that humanity's relationship to God is a basic claim of Christianity and that God actively relates to human beings in three major ways: God creates them, God is there at the end of all things eschatologically, and God reconciles humans when they are alienated from God. The result of this seminal theological work is a textured affirmation of humanity's relationship with God and with each other. It represents the culmination of decades of theological thought and is certain to be recognized as a major achievement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50358575005969,"sku":"CIN0664220525A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50800805249297,"sku":"CIN0664220525G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51005385277713,"sku":"NIN9780664220525","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51284614119697,"sku":"CIN0664220525VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52108570460433,"sku":"GOR006412749","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0664220525.jpg?v=1750880550"},{"product_id":"fabric-of-paul-tillich-s-theology-book-david-h-kelsey-9781610975674","title":"The Fabric of Paul Tillich's Theology","description":"By taking seriously Tillich's claim to be a confessional Church theologian rather than a metaphysician with religious interests, this carefully ordered study gains a fresh perspective on the structure of argument upon which his theological enterprise rests. Scriptural material is shown to control his judgments in much the same way that literature controls those of the literary critic--a particularly illuminating comparison in view of his argument that the verbal icon provided by the biblical picture of Jesus as the Christ bears analogia imaginis to the historical Jesus and hence provides the sole access to the original Christian revelation. Tillich's movement from symbols as data to theological judgments as conclusions is seen to be warranted, not by his ontology, but by his presentation of the phenomenology of revelatory events. Though historical study of Jesus and of the Bible is in principle irrelevant to this use of scripture, his confusions in this area are examined, and the structural flaws in his accounts of the biblical picture of Jesus are shown to yield a Christian theology in which Christology is oddly dispensable. Finally, his discussion of God is used as a test case for the analysis of the general structure of his argument, and the various sorts of conclusions that he feels Scripture authorizes him to draw are cogently appraised. However, the outraged reaction simply deepens the anguish. This book argues that such 'consolation' is theologically problematic because it assumes that unrestricted power is what makes God 'God.' Against that it outlines an account of 'who' and 'what' the Triune God is, framed in terms of God's intrinsic 'glory,' the attractive and perfectly self-expressive self-giving in love that is God's life, and sets limits to the range of things we can say God 'does.' Correlatively it offers an account of different senses in which God is 'sovereign' and 'powerful', one which reflects three ways God relates to all else: to create, to bless eschatologically, and to reconcile, as is scripturally narrated.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51019471094033,"sku":"NIN9781108836975","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51449593299217,"sku":"GOR014284335","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52698822607121,"sku":"CIN1108836976G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108836976.jpg?v=1773317279"},{"product_id":"to-understand-god-truly-book-david-h-kelsey-9781610975667","title":"To Understand God Truly","description":"What are the purposes and priorities that really govern a theological school? Surveying and probing the major positions in this debate, David H. Kelsey argues in this book that the central differences between various voices in theological education emerge most clearly when viewed in light of Athens and Berlin. For Kelsey, Athens and Berlin represent two very different--and ultimately irreconcilable--models of excellent education. In the case of de facto, says Kelsey, that modern North American theological education, for historical reasons, is committed to both models, resulting in ongoing tensions and struggles. Kelsey shows how a variety of significant thinkers--Newman, Niebuhr, Farley, Stackhouse, and several others--fit in the Athens-Berlin framework. In presenting a keen analysis of major themes and patterns of movement in the theological education debate, Between Athens and Berlin itself makes a significant contribution to the debate. Kelsey demonstrates his gifts as a judicious, fair, and comprehensive reporter on an important discussion which is in danger of being treated as merely 'academic.' Perhaps this interpretive summary can reinvigorate the discussion of theological education in such a way as to generate some actual change. --John B.
