With great depth and perception, the author considers the work of one of Scotland's leading painters from her earliest days at Kingston School of Art, through to her most recent commissions, setting it in the wider context of artistic thought. Her full range of work is covered, including still lifes, portraits, self-portraits, landscapes and interiors. The insightful writing, accompanied by lavish illustrations of Victoria Crowe's work, gives readers access to the paintings as they relate to the different eras of her life. The artist's studies at the Royal College of Art, her move to Scotland, the Kittleyknowe years and A Shepherd's Life exhibition are all discussed, as are Plant Memory (a series resulting from her visiting scholarship at St Catharine's College, Cambridge) and the impact of her travels abroad, particularly her time in Italy. In the latter part of the book, the focus moves to the artist's most recent work, including a reflective series of Venetian pictures and a significant group of luminous winter landscapes. We also learn about a unique commission for a series of paintings specifically designed for a Scottish house, and a current project with Dovecot Studios for a tapestry based on a painting from A Shepherd's Life', thus a testament to the enduring quality of her work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49518872690961,"sku":"GOR005887232","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50490605633809,"sku":"GOR011214318","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851497145.jpg?v=1751430049"},{"product_id":"art-of-will-maclean-book-duncan-macmillan-9781840186895","title":"The Art Of Will Maclean","description":"Will Maclean RSA, Professer of Painting in the University of Dundee, is one of the outstanding Scottish artists of his generation. He was born in Inverness where his father, a former sailor, was harbour master, and he spent his childhood between Inverness and Skye. His art is rooted in his knowledge of the Highlands, the Highland people and their history, and in his own early associations with sailors and the sea. These things make it relevant and immediately accessible, yet it remains uncompromisingly modern in its forms and in its concerns. In this new edition, Duncan Macmillan has extended and updated the book, first published in 1992, to include the important work that the artist has done in the last decade. Fittingly, the great Gaelic poet, the late Sorely Maclean, contributed a foreword to the first edition of Symbols of Survival. It is reprinted here and, elsewhere in the book, as he explores the poetry and meaning of Maclean's subtle and complex art, the author shows how, like Sorley MacLean's poetry, it reaches out from the artist's own experience to touch on universal themes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523996786961,"sku":"GOR003592224","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49634848112913,"sku":"GOR006731720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1840186895.jpg?v=1751452143"},{"product_id":"painting-in-scotland-book-duncan-macmillan-9780714824017","title":"Painting in Scotland","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49529645367569,"sku":"GOR005221162","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49627786641681,"sku":"GOR002525900","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714824011.jpg?v=1750743558"},{"product_id":"every-brilliant-thing-book-duncan-macmillan-9781783191437","title":"Every Brilliant Thing","description":"You’re six years old. Intended to make the Memorial accessible to a wide audience, this unique and beautiful publication will give an account of its fascinating history. The Memorial's many different art works include sculpture in bronze, wood and stone and outstanding stained glass. Highly accomplished, each element of the Memorial's design reflects how this is a monument to peace not just to war. Tracing the Memorial's eventful history from its genesis through to its construction and its eventual opening, Duncan Macmillan discusses all aspects of the Memorial from its design to the individual artists that contributed to its creation. Including contextual links to other similar projects, this publication will provide the definitive account of this significant public monument, which continues to commemorate Scottish casualities of war.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49564283568401,"sku":"GOR007127515","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848221568.jpg?v=1751346321"},{"product_id":"scottish-art-in-the-20th-century-1890-2001-book-duncan-macmillan-9781840184570","title":"Scottish Art In The 20th Century 1890-2001","description":"This book tells the story of modern Scottish painting and sculpture. Proposing that sensibility not reason was the basis of morality, the philosophy of moral sense gave birth to the idea of the supremacy of the imagination. Allied to the belief that the imagination flourished more freely in the primitive history of humanity, this idea became a potent inspiration for artists. The author also highlights Thomas Reid's method in his philosophy of common sense of using art and artists to illustrate how perception and expression are intuitive. To be truly expressive, artists should unlearn what they have learned and record their raw sensations, rather than the perceptions that derive from them. Exploring the work of key philosophical and artistic protagonists, this thought-provoking book unearths the fascinating exchanges between art, philosophy and literature during Enlightenment in Scotland that provided the blueprint for modernism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49744406937873,"sku":"NGR9781848226333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52661985902865,"sku":"NLS9781848226333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848226330.jpg?v=1751060026"},{"product_id":"art-of-elizabeth-blackadder-book-duncan-macmillan-9781848226586","title":"The Art of Elizabeth Blackadder","description":"Exploring the development of Elizabeth Blackadder’s art in all its richness, this revised edition of Duncan Macmillan's 1999 book expands the account of an important artist and her significant body of work.    With her oeuvre ranging through still life, landscapes and flower painting, Elizabeth Blackadder (1931-2021) was one of the best known and respected artists in the British painting tradition. Maclean’s work is anchored in the history, archaeology, and literature of the Scottish Highlands and the Highland people, as well as his family background and personal associations with the sea. Perhaps best known for his wall constructions, Maclean is equally at home in sculpture, drawing, printmaking, video and installation. Combining exquisitely hand-made pieces with found or (on occasions) mass produced objects, his work balances between simplicity and complexity and invites the viewer to linger, to admire and to contemplate the universal themes which he explores. Born in Inverness where his father was harbour master, Maclean’s family history is inextricably linked with the Scottish west coast and the Isle of Skye. His first ambition was to follow in his father’s footsteps and go to sea himself. After a period as a midshipman between 1957 and 1959, a failed eye test cut short his career and Maclean entered Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen in 1961. He spent another period at sea in 1968 as a ring-net fisherman which led to an important bursary in 1973 that enabled him to study this traditional fishing method in detail. The body of work, numbering well over 400 drawings, prints and watercolours, is now in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. In 1981 he was appointed lecturer at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, where he remained for fifteen fruitful years, becoming Professor of Fine Art in 1994 and in 2004-2006, Senior Research Fellow and now Emeritus Professor. He was elected Royal Scottish Academician in 1991 and in 1997 he designed and as part of the team, won the Scottish Natural Heritage Supreme Award for three Memorial Cairns in Lewis.
