She finds in those intersections the basis for understanding why women were accused of witchcraft more often than men, why they confessed more often, and why they frequently accused other women of being witches. In negotiating their beliefs about the devil's powers, both women and men embedded womanhood in the discourse of depravity.Puritan ministers insisted that women and men were equal in the sight of God, with both sexes equally capable of cleaving to Christ or to the devil. Nevertheless, Reis explains, womanhood and evil were inextricably linked in the minds and hearts of seventeenth-century New England Puritans. Women and men feared hell equally but Puritan culture encouraged women to believe it was their vile natures that would take them there rather than the particular sins they might have committed.Following the Salem witchcraft trials, Reis argues, Puritans' understanding of sin and the devil changed. Ministers and laity conceived of a Satan who tempted sinners and presided physically over hell, rather than one who possessed souls in the living world. Women and men became increasingly confident of their redemption, although women more than men continued to imagine themselves as essentially corrupt, even after the Great Awakening.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49571616751889,"sku":"GOR002967670","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49723769848081,"sku":"CIN0801486114G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50140842393873,"sku":"CIN0801486114VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52105662202129,"sku":"CIN0801486114A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53001619472657,"sku":"GOR014689378","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0801486114.jpg?v=1758967883"},{"product_id":"american-sexual-histories-book-elizabeth-reis-9780631220817","title":"American Sexual Histories","description":"\"American Sexual Histories\" is a collection of fourteen articles investigating human sexuality in America from the colonial period to the modern day. The essays reflect the many ways historians analyze sexuality and sexual trends, and explore such topics as contraception, interracial sex, 'free love', hysteria, homosexuality, reproductive issues, and the sexual revolution. This volume shows how the evolution of sexuality in America is a product of ongoing negotiation of moral values and shifting political and economic circumstances. Arranged chronologically, the chapters each contain an introduction and one major article, plus supporting documents that illustrate the time, place, and issues covered by the main article. Editor Elizabeth Reis provides a general introduction, questions for study and discussion, and further reading lists that make this an ideal collection for students studying the history of sexuality in America.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49778054660369,"sku":"CIN063122081XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50355927089425,"sku":"CIN063122081XA","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/063122081X.jpg?v=1751294025"},{"product_id":"spellbound-book-elizabeth-reis-9780842025775","title":"Spellbound","description":"Spellbound: Women and Witchcraft in America is a collection of twelve articles that explore crucial events in the history of witch-hunting and its demonization of women in American and American women's own use of witchcraft as a source of identity and strength, as well as the complicated relationship between the two. In Bodies in Doubt, Elizabeth Reis traces the changing definitions, perceptions, and medical management of intersex (atypical sex development) in America from the colonial period to the present. Arguing that medical practice must be understood within its broader cultural context, Reis demonstrates how deeply physicians have been influenced by social anxieties about marriage, heterosexuality, and same-sex desire throughout American history In this second edition, Reis adds two new chapters, a new preface, and a revised introduction to assess recent dramatic shifts in attitudes, bioethics, and medical and legal practices. Human rights organizations have declared early genital surgeries a form of torture and abuse, but doctors continue to offer surgical \"repair,\" and parents continue to seek it for their children. While many are hearing the human rights call, controversies persist, and Reis explains why best practices in this field remain fiercely contested.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50021994660113,"sku":"CIN1421441845VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51025345478929,"sku":"NIN9781421441849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51483812331793,"sku":"NGR9781421441849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52478044209425,"sku":"NLS9781421441849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1421441845.jpg?v=1751018816"},{"product_id":"american-sexual-histories-book-elizabeth-reis-9781444339291","title":"American Sexual Histories","description":"The second edition of American Sexual Histories features an updated collection of sixteen articles and their corresponding primary sources that investigate issues related to human sexuality in America from the colonial era to the present day.
