This collection of thirteen essays, penned by an array of leading scholars in the field, is the first full-length critical study of the Belfast poet and prose writer, and makes a timely appearance in this, the writer's sixtieth year. Since then, he has been hailed by Robert Lowell as 'the most important Irish poet since Yeats', won an unprecedented number of literary prizes and awards, drawn wide-ranging critical acclaim and achieved sales that are rare in the world of poetry . Most school and university students will have studied Heaney's work, and many will have heard him speak during his frequent lecture tours and television appearances.  More than any other twentieth-century poet, Heaney has brought a mass audience to the arena of serious poetry.   In this Readers' Guide, Elmer Andrews explores the critical debates surrounding Heaney's work and popular appeal. Issues of cultural identity and nationality, debates on the power of language and the function of verse are clarified and explored in the writings gathered in this volume.  Beginning with consideration of the early collection, Death of a Naturalist, the Guide reviews and contextualises the material on successive volumes so that students of Heaney's verse will find an accessible pathway through the most important critical writings on this major poet.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49569047085329,"sku":"GOR002540019","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51841740734737,"sku":"GOR011605720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53705547448593,"sku":"GOR003664748","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1840461373.jpg?v=1751441377"},{"product_id":"nathaniel-hawthorne-the-scarlet-letter-book-elmer-kennedy-andrews-9781840460414","title":"Nathaniel Hawthorne - The Scarlet Letter","description":"With the publication of The Scarlet Letter in 1850, Nathaniel Hawthorne achieved not only critical recognition in his native New England, but an undisputed place amongst the newly-emerging ranks of great American writers.  From the very first words of the novel, Hawthorne undertakes a searching re-assessment of the moral doctrines of Calvinism upon which his nation was founded.  In his treatment of the relationships between the condemned adulteress Hester Prynne, her child Pearl, her lover Arthur Dimmesdale and the relentless accuser Roger Chillingworth, Hawthorne sets up a series of dense symbolic contrasts between the harshness of human law and the expansive, accepting laws of nature. The scarlet letter that Hester is forced to wear as a signal of her sin is transformed into a lasting symbol of the moral ambiguities underlying the Puritan beliefs of early American settlement.   In this Readers' Guide, Elmer Kennedy-Andrews introduces and sets in context the enormous range of critical arguments that have been generated by this enduring work.  From the comments and reviews of Hawthorne's contemporaries, to discussions of the novel by fellow artists such as Henry James and D.H. Lawrence, to radical re-readings of the post-war decades, the reader is given an invaluable guide to the critical progress of this key American text.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49573885214993,"sku":"GOR005755270","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50581868052753,"sku":"GOR007078500","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52479489245457,"sku":"NLS9781840460414","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1840460415.jpg?v=1751453080"},{"product_id":"fiction-and-the-northern-ireland-troubles-since-1969-book-elmer-kennedy-andrews-9781851827138","title":"Fiction and the Northern Ireland Troubles Since 1969","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49637530927377,"sku":"GOR013763030","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52785510449425,"sku":"GOR009184098","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53113038045457,"sku":"GOR004320524","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851827137.jpg?v=1751313400"},{"product_id":"ciaran-carson-book-elmer-kennedy-andrews-9781846821561","title":"Ciaran Carson","description":"Ciaran Carson has played a major role in the internationalization of contemporary Irish poetry from the late 1960s, through the 'Troubles' of the '70s, '80s and '90s, to the present time. It is here explored in depth, from the 1960s to the present day.  Ideas of home, place and identity have been continually questioned, re-imagined and re-constructed in Northern Irish poetry. Concentrating on the period since the outbreak of the Troubles in the late 1960s, this study provides a detailed consideration of the work of several generations of poets, from Hewitt and MacNeice, to Fiacc  and Montague, to Simmons,  Heaney, Mahon and Longley, to Muldoon, Carson, Paulin and  McGuckian, to McDonald, Morrissey, Gillisand Flynn. It traces  the extent to which their writing represents a move away from concepts of rootedness and towards a deterritorialized poetics of displacement, mobility, openness and pluralism in an era of accelerating migration and globalisation. In the new readings of place, inherited maps are no longer reliable, and home is no longer the stable ground of identity but seems instead to be always where it is not. The crossing of boundaries and the experience of diaspora open up new understandings of the relations between places, a new sense of the permeability and contingency of cultures, and new concepts of identity and home.   Professor ELMER KENNEDY-ANDREWS teaches in the Department of English at the University of Ulster.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52530647662865,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52530648383761,"sku":"NLS9781843841753","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781843841753.jpg?v=1760653395"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-elmer-kennedy-andrews.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
