It will explore how memories of the war have been filtered through specific cultural forms and political agendas. These range from memorial painting and sculpture, to representations of the destruction of bodies and landscape, and new aesthetic developments in art which offered ways of critiquing and re-imagining post-war society. It will compare visual responses to the war in Britain, Germany and France and include painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, film and medical collections. This accompanying publication will examine how processes of commemoration and mourning were represented through the visual arts in Britain, Germany and France. Illustrations will range from artworks specifically commissioned as memorials of war - such as commemorative painting cycles and memorial sculpture - to those associated with formal and intellectual developments such as Dada and Surrealism, which created new visual forms to process experiences and memories of the conflict. Authors will also examine how memories of war influenced the art of the inter-war years and look at the social impact of the First World War through the interaction between artists, politics and city spaces. Aftermath seeks to broaden the examination of war and memory beyond the modernist canon to show how both traditional and avant-garde art formed part of this process, exploring the parallel resurgence of realism in movements such as Neue Sachlichkeit and the `Return to Order' which responded to the aftermath of war through the reinvention of traditional forms.
Paul Nash is one of the most distinctive and important British artists of the 20th century. He is known for his work as an official war artist, producing some of the most memorable images of the First and Second World Wars, and also as one of the most evocative landscape painters of his generation. While best known for his British landscapes, Nash was also a pioneer of modernism in Britain, promoting the avant-garde European styles of abstraction and surrealism in the 1920s and 1930s. A major retrospective from Tate Britain will chart the developments of Nash's career for the first time through the lens of this perspective, showing how his landscapes provided a stage for his engagements with international modernism. Featuring works from across the four decades of his rich career, including oils, watercolours, assemblages and photographs, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue will be the first to examine Nash's work in an international context. The publication will explore how he drew on surrealist ideas to interpret the British landscape in a way that made connections between modernism and tradition, from his early Symbolist manner, through to the iconic works of the First World War as well as his major landscapes of the interwar period and his 1940s landscape series engaging with natural cycles. The catalogue will present new scholarship on Nash, highlighting in particular his connections with and contributions to modernist groupings; his interest in animism and mythological texts; his use and transformation of found objects (in creative dialogue with Eileen Agar); and his interest in archaeology. Fully illustrated with over 100 beautifully reproduced works from Nash's entire career and a wealth of archival material (some of it never before published), this is a timely survey of one of the most distinctive and well-loved artists of the 20th century.
Associated at various times with Dada, Constructivism and Surrealism, Schwitters produced paintings, collages, sound pieces, sculpture and installation works, as well as journalism, criticism, poetry and short stories. Forced to flee Germany in 1936, Schwitters took refuge first in Norway and then, after the German invasion of Norway, in Britain, where he was interned initially as an enemy alien in 1940 on the Isle of Man before eventually settling in the Lake District. The last eight years of his life, spent in Britain, were in fact intensely productive. His British-period work included collages which utilised London ephemera and American magazines. This period also saw the development of assemblages and sculptures based on found organic objects, culminating in his last great sculpture and installation, the Merzbarn in the Lake District, itself a continuation of the concept of the Hanover Merzbau, one of the key lost works of modern times. The book sees Schwitters not as an artist in isolation but as part of a network, both inside and outside the camps, of other refugee artists and figures in the European avant-garde. Co-curator Emma Chambers has written an overarching introductory essay on Schwitters' time in Britain, and Karin Orchard examines his late collages . A variety of contributors from both Britain and Germany consider Scwhitters' collages, sculpture, the construction of the Merzbarn, the relationship between abstraction and representation in his work, his writings and experience within internment camps, and his influence on succeeding generations of British artists.
Paul Nash is one of the most distinctive and important British artists of the 20th century. Some around her advised divorce. But God spoke truth to her heart and helped her see her part in the crumbling of her marriage. She discovered she needed to let go of her demands to be loved in a prescribed way, and learn to love like Jesus--unconditionally. God helped her have compassion for her husband and see the sin in his life as the effects of traumas he suffered over the years.

The love verses in 1 Corinthians 13 guided Emma in how to love like the Lord. Over time, this caused her to love her husband more than she ever thought possible and brought healing to her heart and to her marriage. The trials in her marriage also created an intimacy with God, which she believes was unattainable any other way. Now she and her husband enjoy a marriage that's better than it's ever been and look forward to the best is yet to come as they soon celebrate 43 years of marriage.

An enlightening introduction to the life and work of Gwen John, whose intense gaze and fascination with the female sitter created some of the most beguiling paintings of the modern age. Gwen John (1878–1939) is now widely recognised as one of the most important artists of her time. Favouring subdued tones and muted colours, her portraits of women in modest interiors appear serene and unassuming. Yet a closer look reveals an intense artistic engagement with her subjects and daring formal experimentation. This book is the perfect introduction to the life and work of this groundbreaking artist. It contextualises John’s career from her foundational time at the Slade School of Art in London to her studio training in Paris, where she later relocated and established herself at the centre of the European art world. Touching on the personal connections and pivotal friendships that influenced her practice, this is a true celebration of an artist with an extraordinary eye for colour and composition, and a singular distinctive vision, masterfully executed.
