He was by then an immensely popular figure, celebrated throughout the Spanish-speaking world, and at the height of his creative powers. After his death, with his work suppressed, he became a potent symbol of the martyrdom of Spain. The manuscript of Lorca’s last poems, his tormented Sonnets of Dark Love, disappeared during the Civil War. For fifty years the poems lived only in the words of the poets who had heard Lorca read them, like Neruda and Aleixandre, who remembered them as ‘a pure and ardent monument to love in which the prime material is now the poet’s flesh, his heart, his soul wide open to his own destruction’. Lorca’s lost sonnets were re-discovered in Spain during the 1980s, and this was the first book to include English translations of these brooding poems. Merryn Williams’ edition draws on the full range of Lorca’s poetry, from the early poems and the gypsy ballads to the agitated Poet in New York sequence and the Arab-influenced gacelas and casidas which followed his American exile. It includes the Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, Lorca’s great elegy for his bullfighter friend, as well as the full text of his famous lecture on the duende, the daemon of Spanish music, song, dance, poetry and art. In these remarkable translations, Lorca’s elemental poems are reborn in English, with their stark images of blood and moon, of water and earth; of bulls, horses and fish; olives, sun and oranges; knives and snow; darkness and death.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49534069899537,"sku":"GOR013671114","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743216705809,"sku":"NGR9781780376103","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51052066603281,"sku":"NIN9781780376103","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121194037521,"sku":"NLS9781780376103","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53625880805649,"sku":"CIN1780376103G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1780376103.jpg?v=1751421556"},{"product_id":"house-of-bernarda-alba-book-federico-lorca-9781848421813","title":"The House of Bernarda Alba","description":"Lorca's extraordinarily powerful drama, the last he wrote before his assassination, explores the darkness at the heart of repression.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49556327268625,"sku":"GOR005456678","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737275736337,"sku":"NGR9781848421813","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52755779059985,"sku":"NIN9781848421813","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53143137845521,"sku":"GOR014771443","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848421818.jpg?v=1751426966"},{"product_id":"lorca-three-plays-book-federico-lorca-9781848426320","title":"Lorca: Three Plays","description":"Three of Federico Garcia Lorca's most famous plays in a single volume: Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba. One by one they make a bid for freedom, with tragic consequences. Lorca's tale depicts the repression of women within Catholic Spain in the years before the war. The House of Bernarda Alba is Lorca's last and possibly finest play, completed shortly before he was murdered by Nationalist sympathisers at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Inspired by real characters and described by the author as 'a true record of village life', it is a tragic tale of frustration and explosive passions in a household of women rulled by a tyrannical mother. Partly, no doubt, it is the appeal of his gypsies, childlike and magical, oppressed by the world around; partly too, the work's elemental concerns: machismo, honor, sex, betrayal, revenge, bloodshed, death; partly also, the many echoes of Andalusian popular culture: horsemen and smugglers, fiestas and local saints, legends and superstitions, ballads and deep song. By its dramatic dynamism, its subtle stylisation and its mythical stature, Romancero gitano is one of the most appealing books of poetry in Spanish literature--but it is also one of the most difficult. In his introduction to this edition for English-speaking students, Ramsden considers briefly Lorca's Double break with the past and then concentrates on the Romancero gitano itself, with emphasis on the interplay of immediate appeal and wider resonances. An annotated select bibliography and select glossary are provided with explanatory end notes offering practical guidance, both linguistic and interpretative.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49645799604497,"sku":"GOR006700711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49649367548177,"sku":"GOR004580371","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51720503329041,"sku":"GOR006140797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52347792458001,"sku":"NLS9780719078255","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53518207648017,"sku":"NIN9780719078255","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0719078253.jpg?v=1751360768"},{"product_id":"house-of-bernarda-alba-book-federico-lorca-9781350461796","title":"The House of Bernarda Alba","description":"You bring such scandal to my house.
