This autobiography of an Irish Prime Minister includes political recollection and the story of the author's private life, including his marriage. The son of a Catholic father and a Protestant mother, his background bred in him a deep commitment to reconciliation in Ireland. He first entered politics while still a university lecturer in economics, having already established himself as a formidable advocate of social reform and modern economic thinking in Ireland. While he was an important figure in the growth and consolidation of the European Community it was Northern Ireland, however, which most engaged Garrett FitzGerlad's political and personal concern. This book includes his full account of the New Ireland Forum and of the complex negotiations for the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985 and he writes of the most significant diplomatic achievements of his career. He describes, in detail, his relations with numerous British political figures during the time and notes their personal characteristics and style.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527598121233,"sku":"GOR001649765","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49640015331601,"sku":"GOR001933491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50479204925713,"sku":"GOR007424207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52094368678161,"sku":"GOR010527951","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/071711600X.jpg?v=1750913611"},{"product_id":"all-in-a-life-book-garret-fitzgerald-9780717120239","title":"All in a Life","description":"Garret FitzGerald is an economist, statistician, journalist, barrister, historian and politician who was twice Taoiseach of Ireland in the 1980s. In this new groundbreaking book, written for the non-specialist reader, former Taoiseach or Prime Minister (1981-1982, 1982-1987) Dr Garret FitzGerald reflects on the fundamental changes that have occurred and on their far-reaching consequences. Examining the forces that have drawn almost all Irish political parties to a common centre, the book questions the rationale and relevance of the current party political structure, and delves into the ever controversial area of ethics in politics. In the economic sphere the book discusses, among other issues, the profound impact of demographic change on Ireland's economic performance, and considers the social and psychological consequences of the rapid rise in average living standards, as well as the problem of reconciling a low tax regime with infra-structural improvement and fairer income distribution. The book also touches on the decline of religion as a moral force with the radicalisation of traditional society, and gives detailed consideration to the shifting ground occupied by Irish Nationalism in the era of the Belfast Agreement, the political rise of Sinn F in, and growing European integration. Dr FitzGerald's humanity, wit and erudition have come together here to produce a classic.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49571648864529,"sku":"GOR010857558","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49594379075857,"sku":"GOR001817086","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53266519294225,"sku":"GOR010570246","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0716527758.jpg?v=1750944330"},{"product_id":"all-in-a-life-book-garret-fitzgerald-9780333584989","title":"All in a Life","description":"Economist, journalist, barrister, historian and politician, Garret FitzGerald was prime minister of Ireland from 1981 to 1987. Following a rich contextual introduction, the authors use the data from the 1824 British parliamentary Inquiry to carry out a statistical analysis of the Irish schools system, drawing on the first and second reports (1825-6) of the Inquiry and on the Irish census of 1821. The 1824 Inquiry was one of the most detailed and comprehensive completed by a European state in the 19th century. It made way for the introduction of Ireland’s first national school system. This book handles themes such as the geographical pattern of male\/female and Catholic\/Protestant school attendance at that time; the scale of payments by parents and the extent to which factors such as gender, geography, religion, and urbanisation influenced school-going patterns. Context is given on little-documented aspects of Irish educational history such as ‘hedge schools’ - secret, makeshift schools operating during the Penal Law period. Thorough appendices are presented on the number of children at school, their gender, religion and school fees. Illustrations, photographs and freshly drawn maps are published throughout the text to illuminate the complex data set. Former taoiseach (premier) of Ireland Garret FitzGerald was researching and editing this work at the time of his death in 2011. The project was taken over by his son, economist John FitzGerald, and other close collaborators.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50667628822801,"sku":"GOR014030018","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50776160829713,"sku":"GOR008437923","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1908996218.jpg?v=1751124263"},{"product_id":"towards-a-new-ireland-book-garret-fitzgerald-9780853141617","title":"Towards a New Ireland","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50694235717905,"sku":"GOR002802583","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50814255366417,"sku":"GOR002656915","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51831027958033,"sku":"GOR006830047","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853141614.jpg?v=1751011749"},{"product_id":"planning-in-ireland-rare-book-garret-fitzgerald-1729245430ada","title":"Planning in Ireland","description":"1968.
