But as recently as the 1970s Glasgow's superb St Enoch's Hotel made way for a shopping centre, and in the 1960s St Pancras itself was also earmarked for demolition. 'Victorian' was a term of abuse. Add in wartime bombing by the Luftwaffe, and town planners eager for ring roads and multi-storeys, and the destruction is shocking. This poignant, angry book, full of stunning images, chronicles the catastrophic swathe cut through our architectural heritage by the twentieth century's sustained antipathy to the nineteenth, entirely through buildings that have disappeared. Of the 200 notable examples of Victorian architecture illustrated in this book, from the magnificent Imperial Institute in Kensington to the vast country house of Eaton Hall, not one still exists. A photograph is all we have left. As well as architectural causes celebres like the Euston Arch and London's Coal Exchange, Gavin Stamp turns up many lesser-known Victorian buildings, like the extraordinary Gothic battlements of Columbia Market in East London, or Chatsworth's soaring glasshouse streamlined like a spaceship. Surprising, chastening, but also uplifting, Lost Victorian Britain is a memorable journey back into a world we should never have lost.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49528849400081,"sku":"GOR007002419","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49542571852049,"sku":"GOR007085313","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49638682788113,"sku":"GOR013068910","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781310181.jpg?v=1764239889"},{"product_id":"english-house-1860-1914-book-gavin-stamp-9780571130474","title":"The English House, 1860-1914","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49529228427537,"sku":"GOR003774242","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50695035126033,"sku":"GOR003466107","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/057113047X.jpg?v=1751104191"},{"product_id":"memorial-to-the-missing-of-the-somme-book-gavin-stamp-9781861978110","title":"The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme","description":"Edwin Lutyens' Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval in Northern France, visited annually by tens of thousands of tourists, is arguably the finest structure erected by any British architect in the twentieth century. The subject is simply whatever in design or architecture happens to take his fancy. It might be the splendid reopening of the magnificent Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station, or the dilapidation of a little-known church in Eastbourne; the much-lamented demise of the original Routemaster bus, or the colossal majesty of the airship sheds that housed the R.101. But while these pieces display a wonderful range and variety, they are unified by Stamp's wider quest: to explore, define and champion the very Englishness of English architecture and design. When fine examples are preserved and restored, he celebrates; when they fall victim to philistine neglect - or, worse, demolition - he mourns. And when the elegant is overshadowed by the merely modish, he deplores. In Anti-Ugly, Stamp has selected the best of these 'excursions', producing a compulsively readable collection that builds into an eloquent, learned, trenchant and often indignant portrait of our national design heritage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49551761178897,"sku":"GOR005361390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49646253932817,"sku":"GOR006291543","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50447802532113,"sku":"CIN1781311234G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781311234.jpg?v=1750766416"},{"product_id":"telephone-boxes-book-gavin-stamp-9780701133665","title":"Telephone Boxes","description":"This is part of a series of guides on the British street which takes a close look at ordinary familiar items, in this case, telephone boxes. Medieval churches, Tudor alleyways, Georgian terraces and Victorian theaters, many vanished for ever, to be replaced by a gruesome landscape of concrete office-blocks and characterless shopping malls. Now, for the first time, Gavin Stamp shows us exactly what we have lost. Reproduced in this haunting volume are hundreds of top-quality photographs of cities from Plymouth to Dundee, all of streets and buildings that are gone for ever. In the accompanying text, Stamp traces their creation and destruction, remembering the massive campaign to save the Euston Arch, wantonly demolished in 1962, and mourning the loss of lovely medieval Coventry, which was already doomed by the city planners even before German air-raids intervened. Alternately fascinating, enraging and heartbreaking, this is an extraordinary evocation of Britain's architectural past, and a much-needed reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49553381720337,"sku":"GOR003625829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49608751317265,"sku":"GOR007459783","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50980806918417,"sku":"GOR014158775","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52788716863761,"sku":"CIN1845132645G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845132645.jpg?v=1751449765"},{"product_id":"changing-metropolis-book-gavin-stamp-9780140070149","title":"The Changing Metropolis","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49555489390865,"sku":"GOR002938295","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49564780953873,"sku":"GOR003834565","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53632375324945,"sku":"GOR008091678","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140070141.jpg?v=1751100815"},{"product_id":"edwin-lutyens-country-house-book-gavin-stamp-9781845137656","title":"Edwin Lutyens Country House","description":"Edwin Lutyens was one of Britain's greatest architects, known for the imaginative adaptations of traditional design in his numerous country houses, as well as the instrumental role he played in designing and building much of New Delhi. Presenting a stunning collection of his architectural designs spanning the many phases of his acclaimed career, this beautifully produced study includes examples of the celebrated architect's early Arts-and-Crafts houses, Surrey-vernacular style, and carefully composed classical houses. Leading architectural authority Gavin Stamp presents his selection of Lutyens' houses in chronological order -with the exception of the Viceroy's House - by the date of their design. Featuring jaw-dropping photography from the unique archives of Country Life magazine, this beautiful book covers of all phases of Lutyens' career and boasts a number of rare images. The vast majority of photographs within the book are contemporaneous to the buildings' design - showing the houses as their architect intended they should look: mellow and yet monumental, fitting into the soft English landscape and enhanced by their luxuriant gardens. As the modernists came of age and the traditionalists began to decline, there arose a rich variety of styles and tastes in Britain and across the empire, a variety that reflected the restless zeitgeist of the years before the Second World War. At the time of his death in 2017, Gavin Stamp, one of Britain's leading architectural critics, was at work on a deeply considered account of British architecture in the interwar period, correcting what he saw as the skewed view of earlier historians who were unable to see past modernism. Beginning with a survey of the modern movement after the armistice, Interwar untangles the threads that link lesser-known movements like the Egyptian revival with the enduring popularity of the Tudorbethan, to chronicle one of Britain's most dynamic architectural periods. The result is more than an architectural history - it is the portrait of a changing nation. As an account of the period that still shapes much of Britain's towns and cities, Gavin Stamp's final work is the definitive history of British architecture between the Great War and the Blitz.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49749741175057,"sku":"NGR9781800817395","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50479579201809,"sku":"GOR013602119","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51400169193745,"sku":"NIN9781800817395","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52684252315921,"sku":"NLS9781800817395","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800817398.jpg?v=1763115287"},{"product_id":"victorian-buildings-in-london-1837-87-book-gavin-stamp-9780851395005","title":"Victorian Buildings in London, 1837-87","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49956260774161,"sku":"GOR006432643","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50175542886673,"sku":"GOR003072598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51604468302097,"sku":"GOR009007131","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0851395007.jpg?v=1751395925"},{"product_id":"architect-of-promise-book-gavin-stamp-9781900289511","title":"An Architect of Promise","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50023440941329,"sku":"GOR011207241","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1900289512.jpg?v=1750963701"},{"product_id":"greek-thomson-book-gavin-stamp-9780748613458","title":"'Greek' Thomson","description":"Alexander 'Greek' Thomson is at last being recognised as an architect of genius, comparable in stature to Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Hudson thereafter did all he could to promote the work of a man he admired without reservation, commissioning Lutyens to design the magazine's of?ces in Covent Garden in 1904, as well as three country houses. Country Life published articles about virtually all his buildings shortly after their completion, recording them as the architect intended, creating an unparalleled visual archive which is the source for this selection of outstanding photographs of Lutyens's domestic architecture. Gavin Stamp's authoritative introduction places Lutyens ?rmly among the giants of architecture: 'an architect of rare genius and humanity.' His selection of twenty-two houses, representative of all the phases of Lutyens's career, illustrates the architect's dual achievements as a renewer of both vernacular tradition and of the Classical language of architecture. Debate continues about Lutyens's place in modern architecture, but his legacy of some of the most inventive and romantic examples of British domestic architecture is unquestionable. There are superb examples of his Surrey vernacular style (with its gables, timber, and sweeping planes of tiled roof), such as Fulbrook House--one of his earliest masterpieces; Deanery Garden, designed with the garden in mind for Hudson; early Arts and Crafts houses, such as Goddards and Little Thakeham; his carefully composed Classical houses, such as Heathcote, and his grandest country house of all, Middleton Park, built between the two World Wars. Here, too, are examples of his brilliant enlargements and alterations to existing buildings, such as Lindisfarne Castle, and his creation of the epitome of castle style: Castle Drogo. This pictorial survey culminates in Lutyens's most famous creation: Viceroy's House in New Delhi, one of the greatest buildings in the world. Founded in 1897, Country Life from the outset published remarkable photographs, and the huge in?uence the magazine exerted was nowhere more apparent than in its unprecedented championship of Edwin Lutyens, whose buildings it promoted for almost ?fty years. For this book, two hundred photographs have been beautifully reproduced from the Country Life archive and, combined with Gavin Stamp's illuminating essay, provide a unique survey of one of Britain's foremost architects.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50028366168337,"sku":"GOR008792592","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53343905120529,"sku":"GOR014862389","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1580932371.jpg?v=1751342000"},{"product_id":"gothic-for-the-steam-age-book-gavin-stamp-9781781311240","title":"Gothic for the Steam Age","description":"George Gilbert Scott was the most prolific and most famous of Victorian architects. For many, however, blinded by prejudice to the merits of Victorian architecture and the Gothic Revival, he was the most notorious. The rehabilitation of his reputation after a century of abuse is symbolised, above all, by the magnificent restoration of one of his best-known buildings (once seriously threatened with demolition), the hotel at St Pancras Station in London. He was the founder of the greatest architectural dynasty in British history, a dynasty which still flourishes in the fourth and fifth generation.     Scott ran the largest architectural office of its time and it produced designs for some seven or eight hundred buildings (estimates vary). Only a limited selection can therefore be illustrated here, but all of his major secular works are represented, whether by old or new photographs, original drawings and prints, along with the best and most significant of his many churches.  The first in what is a long-overdue illustrated biography of Sir Gilbert Scott, Gavin Stamp has trawled tirelessly through the archives, trying to piece together the life of this great Victorian architect. The sheer scale of Scott's work and the foundations of an architectural empire has amassed a huge portfolio. Within these pages is a celebration of his work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50059098751249,"sku":"GOR007357368","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52803077570833,"sku":"GOR010583832","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781311242.jpg?v=1764239868"},{"product_id":"edwin-lutyens-book-gavin-stamp-9781854107633","title":"Edwin Lutyens","description":"This selection of Edward Lutyen's work represents all the phases of his career. Hudson thereafter did all he could to promote the work of a man he admired without reservation, commissioning Lutyens to design the magazine's offices in Covent Garden in 1904, as well as three country houses. Country Life published articles about virtually all his buildings shortly after their completion, recording them as the architect intended, creating an unparalleled visual archive which is the source for this selection of outstanding photographs of Lutyens's domestic architecture. Gavin Stamp's authoritative introduction places Lutyens firmly among the giants of architecture: 'an architect of rare genius and humanity'. His selection of twenty-two houses, representative of all the phases of Lutyens's career, illustrates the architect's dual achievements as a renewer of both vernacular tradition and of the Classical language of architecture. Debate continues about Lutyens's place in modern architecture, but his legacy of some of the most inventive and romantic examples of British domestic architecture is unquestionable. There are superb examples of his Surrey vernacular style (with its gables, timber, and sweeping planes of tiled roof), such as Fulbrook House-one of his earliest masterpieces; Deanery Garden, designed with the garden in mind for Hudson; early Arts and Crafts houses, such as Goddards and Little Thakeham; his carefully composed Classical houses, such as Heathcote, and his grandest country house of all, Middleton Park, built between the two World Wars. Founded in 1897, Country Life from the outset published remarkable photographs, and the huge influence the magazine exerted was nowhere more apparent than in its unprecedented championship of Edwin Lutyens, whose buildings it promoted for almost fifty years. For this book, two hundred photographs have been beautifully reproduced from the Country Life archive and, combined with Gavin Stamp's illuminating essay, provide a unique survey of one of Britain's foremost architects.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50113423966481,"sku":"CIN1580930905G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1580930905.jpg?v=1751374818"},{"product_id":"memorial-to-the-missing-of-the-somme-book-gavin-stamp-9781861978967","title":"The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme","description":"Edwin Lutyens' Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval in Northern France, visited annually by tens of thousands of tourists, is arguably the finest structure erected by any British architect in the twentieth century. It is the principal, tangible expression of the defining event in Britain's experience and memory of the Great War, the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916, and it bears the names of 73,000 soldiers whose bodies were never found at the end of that bloody and futile campaign. This moving and original study by an acclaimed architectural historian tells the origin of the memorial in the context of commemorating the war dead; it considers the giant classical brick arch in architectural terms; and also explores its wider significance and its resonances today. The Wonders of the World is a series of books that focuses on some of the world's most famous sites or monuments. Their names will be familiar to almost everyone: they have achieved iconic stature and are loaded with a fair amount of mythological baggage. These monuments have been the subject of many books over the centuries, but our aim, through the skill and stature of the writers, is to get something much more enlightening, stimulating, even controversial, than straightforward histories or guides.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50165793325329,"sku":"GOR006422565","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50476586795281,"sku":"GOR011214250","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51597743882513,"sku":"GOR005190313","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52108689342737,"sku":"GOR003628320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1861978960.jpg?v=1750866934"},{"product_id":"greek-thomson-book-sam-mckinstry-9780748604807","title":"Greek' Thomson","description":"Written by a team of architectural commentators and historians this book covers the full range of Alexander \"Greek\" Thomson's architectural talents. As an account of the period that still shapes much of Britain's towns and cities, Gavin Stamp's final work is the definitive history of British architecture between the Great War and the Blitz.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51201722024209,"sku":"NGR9781800817401","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51376560767249,"sku":"GOR014245551","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51771904491793,"sku":"GOR014397136","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52684920586513,"sku":"NLS9781800817401","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52702471258385,"sku":"NIN9781800817401","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800817401.jpg?v=1759232742"},{"product_id":"great-perspectivists-rare-book-gavin-stamp-1728468306mhp","title":"Great Perspectivists","description":"1982.
