About his fastball, Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson once said: “Listen, mister, no man alive can throw harder than Smoky Joe Wood.”   Smoky Joe Wood chronicles the singular life befitting such a baseball legend. Wood got his start impersonating a female on the National Bloomer Girls team. A natural athlete, he pitched for the Boston Red Sox at eighteen, won twenty-one games and threw a no-hitter at twenty-one, and had a 34-5 record plus three wins in the 1912 World Series, for a 1.91 ERA, when he was just twenty-two. Then in 1913 Wood suffered devastating injuries to his right hand and shoulder that forced him to pitch in pain for two more years. After sitting out the 1916 season, he came back as a converted outfielder and played another five years for the Cleveland Indians before retiring to coach the Yale University baseball team.  With details culled from interviews and family archives, this biography, the first of this rugged player of the Deadball Era, brings to life one of the genuine characters of baseball history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50274160640273,"sku":"CIN0803244991G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51694896120081,"sku":"CIN0803244991VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52737694302481,"sku":"NIN9780803244993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0803244991.jpg?v=1761390683"},{"product_id":"science-of-the-early-americas-book-gerald-wood-9780531115244","title":"Science of the Early Americas","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50304008651025,"sku":"CIN0531115240G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50353258430737,"sku":"CIN0531115240VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0531115240.jpg?v=1751040783"},{"product_id":"die-wahrnehmung-stadtischen-wandels-in-der-postmoderne-book-gerald-wood-9783810035912","title":"Die Wahrnehmung städtischen Wandels in der Postmoderne","description":"Die drei in dem vorangegangenen Teilkapitel II.l angelegten und verfolgten Str nge der Rekonstruktion der Postmoderne-Debatte - Postmoderne als Stil, als Reflektion  ber Erkenntnis und deren Gewinnung und Postmoderne als Epoche - sollen in diesem Teilkapitel II.2 zusammengef hrt werden. Diese Zusammenschau erfolgt unter einem ganz spezifischen Blickwinkel, n mlich aus der Perspektive der Stadtentwicklung in der Postmoderne. Das bedeutet zugleich Fokussierung und Zuspitzung, Vereinfachung und Auslassung. Aufgrund dieser Fokussierung des Blicks sollen hier lediglich Hinweise gegeben werden auf den generellen Einfluss der Postmoderne-Debatte in der Geographie, keinesfalls aber eine  berblicksartige Zusammenfassung des 36 Diskussionsstandes und ebenso wenig eine vertiefte (methodologische) Er- 37  rterung postmodernen Geographie-Machens - Ein erster Hinweis auf das Themenfeld Stadtentwicklung und Postmo- derne wurde bereits in Kapitel II.l.2 (S. 31) mit Blick auf die Lesarten des St dtischen gegeben. In ihrer Betrachtung aktueller Entwicklungstendenzen nordamerikanischer St dte, insbesondere des Gro raums Los Angeles, ver- abschieden die zitierten Autoren SOJA (2000) und DEAR (2000) die  ber- kommenen sozial kologischen Modelle der Chicagoer Schule mit Verweis auf deren erkenntnistheoretischen Realismus. Stattdessen wird der urbane Raum als ein in vielf ltiger Weise fragmentiertes Gebilde konzeptionalisiert. Danach existiere urbaner Raum nicht (mehr) als zusammenh ngende und er- kennbare Einheit, sondern als ein r umliches Mosaik verschiedener Orte, die sich um bestehende St dte und Metropolen gebildet haben und mit diesen ei- ne neue r umliche Form bilden, n mlich einen  konomisch fragmentierten Raum und - in der Folge von allgemeinen konomischen und gesellschaftli- chen Fragmentierungstendenzen - einen sozial und soziokulturell gespalten Raum (SUDJIC 1993).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52675425173777,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52675425960209,"sku":"NLS9783810035912","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783810035912.jpg?v=1762301871"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-gerald-wood.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
