The wooden hand press was replaced by the iron press, it in turn to be supplanted by platen and cylinder machines which afforded precise reigister and colouring working. The plain Roman types of the eighteenth century gave way to characterful fat faces and Egyptians, and with the art-printing movement of the 1880's tyography became ever more complex. In decorative printing the century began with the engraved copper plate supreme, but by mid-century engraving was in decline, supplanted by lithography, which was to facilitate colour printing of great quality through the chromolitho process. The printer of 1800 could be jack of several different trades, printer of everything from handbills to books and newspapers, and likely as not grocer and travel agent as well. But the new century brought increasing specialism, so that by c. 1860 book, newspaper and jobbing printing were virtually separate trades, and it is with the last - the printing of tradesman's cards and billheads, music covers, playbills, greeting cards and other ephemera - that this book is chiefly concerned.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49504392872209,"sku":"GOR001463890","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0747803307.jpg?v=1751452731"},{"product_id":"design-and-printing-of-ephemera-in-britain-and-america-1720-1920-book-graham-hudson-9780712349048","title":"The Design and Printing of Ephemera in Britain and America 1720-1920","description":"This book is new in that it discusses ephemera as an aspect of design history, showing how function, process and period have affected the changing appearance of leaflets, tickets, posters, trade cards and other ephemera. The printing histories of Britain and America are closely woven. Colonial printers and engravers imported British type and equipment and took instruction from the same manuals, a relationship that continued through the first half of the nineteenth century. It was in the years following the Civil War that American and British graphic design and typography began to establish their own identities as developments in colour printing brought an explosion of colourful ephemera. Richly illustrated with letterforms, engravings, drawings and the reproduction in colour of 200 items of ephemera, this is a book for collectors, students, design historians and all those with an interest in the visual arts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50859918262545,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50859918590225,"sku":"GOR006645455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0712349049.jpg?v=1751231842"},{"product_id":"migration-security-and-resistance-book-graham-hudson-9780367523275","title":"Migration, Security, and Resistance","description":"This volume explores the digitization, privatization, and spatial displacement of border security and the effects these have on political accountability and migrant rights. The governance of security and migration is unfolding in new political spaces. Cooperation and competition among immigration officials, border guards, transnational security corporations, IT companies, local police, and international organizations has decoupled migration governance from national political structures. The chapters in the volume examine how these dynamics affect the deployment and constraint of sovereign power in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the EU. Contributors trace this process from the disciplinary perspectives of law, political science, sociology, criminology, and geography. Part I of the book explores the reconfiguration of security and migration governance through historical processes of privatization, digitization, and the rescaling of border control technologies to local and global spaces. Part II explores how migrant rights actors have responded by rescaling resistance to global and local levels. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, global governance, migration studies, and international relations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51149672710417,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51149675299089,"sku":"NIN9780367523275","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52521293611281,"sku":"NLS9780367523275","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367523272.jpg?v=1751260275"},{"product_id":"migration-security-and-resistance-book-graham-hudson-9780367528201","title":"Migration, Security, and Resistance","description":"This volume explores the digitization, privatization, and spatial displacement of border security and the effects these have on political accountability and migrant rights.
