Despite its title, this book is not about theology. When a psychologist writes of God, he must do so within the confines of his own field of inquiry: the psyche. Mogenson's aim is to focus attention on the religious dimension of the psychology of those overwhelming events we describe as traumatic. Whether a divine being really exists or not, the psychological fact remains that we tend to experience traumatic events as if they were in some sense divine.
This book, written in the genre of "Imaginal Psychology", presents the imaginal dimension of the mourning process. Specifically, it is about how two characters from Joseph Conrad's great novel, Lord Jim, prefigure what later in the century became the figures of the psychoanalyst and patient. Usually, when psychology engages with literature it applies insights gained from the clinic to works of literary art. Taking the opposite approach, this rich and evocative study reflects the soulfulness that psychology has largely forfeited in our time (though it is supposed to be the logos of the soul) in the case of the chief ship's mate, Jim, who in Conrad's novel abandons his ship in dereliction of his duties. Long before psychology dreamt of the courtroom (the allusion, here, is to an earlier book of this essay's author), it anticipated the psychoanalytic version of itself in the story of a mariner's inquest. Attending at this inquest, the narrator of the novel, Captain Marlow, becomes interested in how it came to pass that the young ship's officer made such a ruin of his life and career and in the question of how he will subsequently come to terms with his difficult fate. These, of course, are interests and concerns with which contemporary analysts and psychotherapists can easily identify. Reading of Jim, patients and situations from our own practices are bound to spring to mind, and moments from our own lives, too, less for what they indicate clinically, than for the bearing each may have had, as the descendants of that literary figure, with respect to the continuing provenance of psychology itself. No previous familiarity with Conrad's Lord Jim novel is required.
Can the theories of Freud and Jung be read through the stories of Norse Mythology? Are Psychoanalysis and Analytical Psychology a Northern form of gnosis?C.G. Jung regarded psychology to be a modern form of myth. Shaped by archetypal structures, psychological theories, he maintained, do not simply explain our psychic life in the manner of a science, they also give expression to the soul. Inspired by this insight, the present book examines the writings of Freud and Jung in the light of Norse mythology. Ideas such as psychic reality, ego-ideal, participation mystique, and kinship libido become figures in its pages, the figures of Thor, Baldr, and the Volsungs. Illumined in this way, the founding texts of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology are shown to be a veritable pantheon of God-terms. Jung's theory of the archetype is read as a variant of the old stories concerning Thor's encounters with the giants. Freud's theories of a death instinct, repetition compulsion, mourning and the ego-ideal are read as a variant to the tale of Baldr's death. And the fractious relations of Freud, Jung and Sabina Spielrein are seen as reflecting the saga of the Volsungs. Imaginative and scholarly, Northern Gnosis will be valued by the psychoanalytic reader for its fresh appreciation of Freud and Jung as makers of the myths that continue to inform our minds.
In this ground-breaking book, the use of legal metaphors and the courtroom analogy by Freud and Jung are examined in a manner that shows analytical psychology and psychoanalysis in fresh perspective as disciplines of truth in the spirit of a court proceeding.
Within the vast corpus of the works of C.G. Jung is a paper titled, Psychotherapists or the Clergy. Apropos of the case Jung makes in that text with respect to what therapists to their betterment have learnt from their colleagues in the clergy, the term that provides the title for this essay-Vicarius Animae-is a designation intended to highlight the soul-mediating, truth-discerning function of the psychotherapist by means of an allusion to the vicarius role that priests have traditionally had within the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches as pastoral facilitators of the cure of souls, and Popes as the representatives of Christ on this earth. Whereas, formerly, throughout the aeons in which these religions held sway, soul (in the sense of the logic of human being-in-the world) had had the form of God, its mediator the form of priest, in our day, post mortem dei, soul has come to have the form of psychological phenomena, its mediator the form of analyst and psychotherapist. In keeping with this, the meaning of the term Speculative in the subtitle of this volume is roughly analogous to the meaning that speculation and speculative had formerly had within the tradition of the Speculative Philosophy to which Hegel belonged. Though Jung, as is well-known, had repeatedly expressed antipathy toward Hegel, even dubbing him on one occasion a psychologist manqu , subsequent Jungian scholarship has clearly shown that the contributions Hegel made to the speculative philosophy of his day fit hand-in-glove with Jung's great insight into psychology's lack of a vantage point outside the psyche to view in from objectively. In this essay, implications for Jungian psychotherapy of this complementarity are explored by means of a focus upon occasions in which, interpreting boldly, the analytic psychotherapist is inspired to give interpretive utterance to the soul situation of the patient by saying I ... on his or her behalf. Such vicarius I-statements, as these may also be called, are not concocted by the therapist. Neither are they given out by him or her as a matter of technique. When authentic, they rather have phenomenon character and are the spontaneous expression in the form of subject of what Jung variously referred to as the coming to consciousness of the psychic process, the soul's speaking about itself, and interpretation from above ...

In this ground-breaking book, the use of legal metaphors and the courtroom analogy by Freud and Jung are examined in a manner that shows analytical psychology and psychoanalysis in fresh perspective as disciplines of truth in the spirit of a court proceeding.
