It took place in a remote African settlement when a travelling correspondent for the New York Herald successfully concluded an assignment to find the renowned explorer. But the meeting, and the events surrounding it, proved to be more than just a simple news story. Stanley's accounts of his expedition not only helped transform Livingstone into one of the great Victorian heroes, but were also the springboard from which Stanley himself became the most accomplished of all African explorers. How I Found Livingstone was written in six weeks, published in November 1872, and had sold through three printings by Christmas. For Stanley was not only a great explorer, he was also one of the most talented writers ever to tell the tale of travel and discovery in Africa. His account of his journey through East Africa, and his time spent investigating Lake Tanganyika with Livingstone, is one of the classics of African exploration.
Perhaps best known as the intrepid adventurer who located the missing explorer David Livingstone in equatorial Africa in 1871, Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) played a major role in assembling the fragmented discoveries and uncertain geographical knowledge of central Africa into a coherent picture. He was the first European to explore the Congo River; assisted at the founding of the Congo Free State, and helped pave the way for the opening up of modern Africa.
In this classic account of one of his most important expeditions, the venerable Victorian recounts the incredibly difficult and perilous journey during which he explored the great lakes of Central Africa, confirming their size and position, searched for the sources of the Nile, and traced the unknown Congo River from the depths of the continent to the sea. Accompanied by three Englishmen and a crew of Africans, Stanley left Zanzibar in 1874. He traveled to Lake Victoria, which he circumnavigated in his boat, the Lady Alice. Almost immediately, illness, malnutrition and conflicts with native tribes began to decimate his followers. Nevertheless, the explorer pushed on, also circumnavigating Lake Tanganyika, which he determined to be unconnected with the Nile system. Finally in 1876, Stanley was ready to undertake the grandest task of all -- exploring the Livingstone (Congo) River. He sailed down the vast waterway to the lake he called Stanley Pool, then on to a series of 32 cataracts he named Livingstone Falls. Unable to go further by boat, Stanley continued overland, reaching the Atlantic Ocean on August 12, 1877. Mishaps, hostile tribes, and disease had killed his three white companions and half the Africans, but Stanley had attained his objective.
His tremendous perseverance (his persistence led his men to nickname him Bula Matari -- the rock breaker) was complemented by Stanley's abilities as a keen observer and accomplished prose stylist. These talents are fully evident in this exciting narrative. It offers not only the action and adventure of a life-and-death struggle to survive in the African wilderness, but detailed descriptions of native peoples, customs, and culture; the flora and fauna of central Africa; and a wealth of geographical, ecological, and other information. Supplemented with 149 black-and-white illustrations and a foldout map, this monumental narrative will be welcomed by anyone interested in the European exploration of central Africa during the nineteenth century, the exploits of one of the great explorers of all time, and a breathtaking story of human endurance and achievement in the face of immense odds.
1969. Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) was an uncommon man. Orphaned as a child, he was raised at an English institution, which he fled to go to United States. Here he became a journalist, and in 1870 he was given the chance of a lifetime when the New York Herald assigned him to track down English missionary David Livingstone, lost in the heart of Black Africa. This was a superhuman task that Stanley completed successfully. In these pages, the great explorer recounts the legendary adventure that helped the Western world uncover the secrets of a mysterious land.
through-the-dark-continent-or-the-sources-of-the-nile-around-the-great-lakes-of-book-henry-morton-stanley-9780543942876
Through the Dark Continent: Or, The Sources of the Nile, around the Great Lakes of Equatorial Africa, and down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean. After emigrating to America in 1859, Stanley worked as a journalist for the New York Herald. In 1869 he was instructed to undertake an expedition to find the missionary David Livingstone, and the success of this mission brought him public recognition and financial success. Published in 1895, these two volumes contain Stanley's early journalistic writing as special correspondent for the Herald and the Missouri Democrat. Volume 2 begins in 1869, when Stanley was sent to report on the inauguration of the Suez Canal, to write a guide to the Nile and to give an account of Sir Charles Warren's explorations underneath Jerusalem, before proceeding through Persia to India. Displaying his characteristic energy, versatility and direct writing style throughout, Stanley portrays, in the words of his publisher, 'life-like pictures of times gone by'.
Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904) was a journalist and explorer renowned for his adventures in Africa. First published in 1898, this is a compendium of letters written by Stanley during his travels to Bulawayo, Johannesburg and Pretoria, which lend a unique insight into colonial South Africa in the late nineteenth century. Focusing on the country's culture and commercial development, he recalls his impressions of industries such as railways, farms and gold mines, social issues such as immigration and poverty, and the contentious relations between the Boer peoples and the British colonists which led to the Second Boer War. Through his passionate exposition, we learn of his adversity towards President Kruger's policies, and his compassion for the people who he claims were left to starve because the government's priorities were military. His memoirs provide a revealing snapshot of an important period in South Africa's history.
Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904) was a journalist and explorer renowned for his adventures in Africa. Through his recollections we learn how his troubled early life - an impoverished childhood in a workhouse and some harrowing experiences as a young soldier - were what drove him to succeed as an explorer, and gave him the strength to deal with the sometimes vehement opposition he encountered. Although Stanley died before finishing this book, his wife Dorothy brought it to completion by compiling and editing the letters and memoirs he wrote during his travels, so that his avowed aim - to encourage impoverished young people to realise their ambitions - was met. This is the story of a man who, in the context of his own time, achieved 'greatness' against the odds, though his imperialist and allegedly racist views later caused the eclipse of his reputation.
Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904) was a journalist and explorer renowned for his adventures in Africa.
