With wit and simplicity Irina describes a biased and turbulent education, being pressured to work for the KGB, the growth of faith that became so important to her in later life, and an impromptu wedding. Ratushinskaya shows how her early experiences moulded her personality, enabling her at a time of almost unbearable pressure to remain true to her own convictions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49538280128785,"sku":"GOR007681001","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473637244.jpg?v=1751020225"},{"product_id":"pencil-letter-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9781852240509","title":"Pencil Letter","description":"Irina Ratushinskaya was only 28-years-old when she was sentenced to seven years' hard labour and five years' internal exile, accused of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda. Throughout years of war, famine, political struggle and incredible hardship, their deep friendships sustain each of the families. Their lives are rent by tragedy; some friends are hounded by anti-Semites, while others join opposite sides in the Civil War or are forced to flee to Odessa. But through it all, their characteristic good humour and faith in each other enable their close circle to survive.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49561802703121,"sku":"GOR012047039","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49574783320337,"sku":"GOR007681165","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49617013342481,"sku":"CIN1473637260G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49733005803793,"sku":"NGR9781473637269","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473637260.jpg?v=1751436445"},{"product_id":"grey-is-the-colour-of-hope-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9781473637221","title":"Grey is the Colour of Hope","description":"If it ever falls to you, my reader (though God forbid!) to see your name written on a prison wall and followed by the letters 'LYMTL', that will simply mean 'Love You More Than Life'. These letters are no harder to remember than 'KGB'. GREY IS THE COLOUR OF HOPE is the searing account of the author's experiences in a brutal Soviet labour camp. Only twenty-eight when she was imprisoned for her poetry, Irina Ratushinskaya was already regarded as a leading writer of her generation, in the line of Mandelstam and Pushkin. She nearly died from maltreatment and a series of hunger strikes before eventually finding freedom. With surprising moments of humour, her inspiring memoir reveals how a group of incarcerated women built for themselves a life of selfless courage, order and mutual support.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49565300097297,"sku":"GOR007680995","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49652811989265,"sku":"GOR012935360","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732944003345,"sku":"NGR9781473637221","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49937244717329,"sku":"CIN1473637228A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50376513290513,"sku":"CIN1473637228G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51327680348433,"sku":"CIN1473637228VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473637228.jpg?v=1772792605"},{"product_id":"fictions-and-lies-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9781473637283","title":"Fictions and Lies","description":"In FICTIONS AND LIES, a writer dies suddenly, in fear of KGB pursuit. His last manuscript, which is thought to be dangerously anti-Soviet, is missing from his apartment, so immediately becomes the object of a rapid police search. As it is traced, whom will it implicate, and what else will it reveal? Deftly, we are led into a world where right and wrong are problematic in ways we never experienced in the West, where integrity and self-respect may prove costly for one's family and friends, where compromise may prove unexpectedly difficult to avoid, and yet where truth and honesty matter all the more for being so elusive.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49576639430929,"sku":"GOR007681003","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49652633501969,"sku":"GOR008035165","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473637287.jpg?v=1750892424"},{"product_id":"dance-with-a-shadow-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9781852242336","title":"Dance with a Shadow","description":"Irina Ratushinskaya was only 28-years-old when she was sentenced to seven years' hard labour and five years' internal exile, accused of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda. Her crime: writing poetry. She was held for three years in a strict regime labour camp, in a special unit for women political prisoners where she suffered beatings, force-feeding and solitary confinement in brutal, freezing conditions. But her poems were smuggled out of the camp, and published in 1986 by Bloodaxe in No, I'm Not Afraid, the book which spearheaded an international campaign which eventually secured her release. This new collection brings together over 50 previously untranslated poems written over the past 20 years, beginning with early work influenced by Russian ballads and pop songs, and later by her discovery of the banned work of the great Russian poets Akhmatova, Mandelstam, Pasternak and Tsvetayeva. Even in those poems written in the 1970s, many of which are about love and parting, there are premonitions of what was to follow. Dance with a Shadow includes over 20 poems from the labour camp which weren't in her two previous Bloodaxe collections, as well as poems written since she came to the West. It shows that despite her ordeal, her poetry has been remarkably consistent in its concerns and subject-matter. She has always been sustained by a deep personal faith and a courageous assertion of the human spirit, but often her imagin-ation and poetic gift have reflected this in unexpected ways, through her humour and in poems about mythical creatures, dragons and mice, friends, memories and Biblical subjects, poems for children. All these are represented in Dance with a Shadow in poems written before, during and after her imprisonment.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49611159175441,"sku":"GOR001552176","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852242337.jpg?v=1751457450"},{"product_id":"grey-is-the-color-of-hope-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9780394571409","title":"Grey Is the Color of Hope","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49613887373585,"sku":"GOR012732217","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49654715646225,"sku":"GOR010590737","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49755444838673,"sku":"CIN0394571401G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50449502241041,"sku":"CIN0394571401VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53533184360721,"sku":"CIN0394571401A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0394571401.jpg?v=1751324666"},{"product_id":"pencil-letter-poetry-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9780679726005","title":"Pencil Letter-Poetry","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49785519505681,"sku":"CIN0679726004G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50012958064913,"sku":"CIN0679726004A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0679726004.jpg?v=1751008524"},{"product_id":"in-the-beginning-book-irina-ratushinskaya-9780394571416","title":"In the Beginning","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49988632183057,"sku":"GOR013829455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53032617541905,"sku":"GOR002817853","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53113087525137,"sku":"CIN039457141XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/039457141X.jpg?v=1751134622"},{"product_id":"fictions-and-lies-a-novel-rare-book-irina-ratushinskaya-1665731772lsa","title":"Fictions and Lies: A Novel","description":"1999. These carefully edited letters and diaries trace their progress, revealing their day-to-day experiences, their success--or lack of it--in finding gold, and their lives in bustling mining settlements. Private dreams of quick fortunes in El Dorado and public dreams of commercial empire and national greatness moved the emigrants, writes Helen McCann White in her introduction, which places the three-month expeditions in their broader historical context and interprets their significance for the development of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Montana.
