A veteran of 20 years travel in America, Asia and the Near East, it was her last great adventure, but one as full of drama and spectacle as anything that had gone before. Eschewing the leisure enjoyed by England's expatriate community in Shanghai, she was thrilled and occasionally aghast at what she found in the little-known land which lay beyond. Travelling alone by riverboat and basket chair, she made her way almost to the Tibetan border, staying in inns and mission stations, observing with fascination the landscape and customs of the people, surviving the terror of a lynching mob, the hostitily of officials who would block her path and the perils of snow storms at 12,000 feet.
In 1872, Isabella Bird, daughter of a clergyman, set off alone to the Antipodes 'in search of health' and found she had embarked on a life of adventurous travel. Challenging the label of novelas de la violencia, the author analyses them as products of their own historical time and takes into account their broader implications, such as their representation of the society they narrate. These novels are shown to be the product of political and ideological issues: the real preoccupations of the writers were the balance of power, social dysfunctionality and the need for reform in a society transitioning from rural to urban. These issues are traced in a close reading of representative novels, in which feature letrados and intellectuals and their role in the evolution of society, culture, literature and power in twentieth-century Colombia. With its critical-theoretical approach, this book constitutes a significant and innovative contribution to the debate on Latin American culture and literature.
Isabella Bird, an Englishwoman whose extensive travels and writings earned her the first female membership of the Royal Geographic Society, visited the Rocky Mountains alone during the autumn of 1873.A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains, gives a fascinating description of life in the untamed Colorado Territory at a time when it was only notionally under the control of the American authorities, having been brutally seized from the Indians. She was born in Boroughbridge and grew up in Tattenhall, Cheshire. She was a sickly child and spent her entire life struggling with various ailments. Much of her illness may have been psychogenic, for when she was doing exactly what she wanted she was almost never ill. Her real desire was to travel. In 1854, Bird went to visit relatives in America. She detailed the journey anonymously in her first book The Englishwoman in America (1856). She also travelled to Canada, Scotland, Australia, and Hawaii. She studied medicine and resolved to travel as a missionary. She visited missions in India, Persia, Kurdistan and Turkey. Her final journey was to China and Korea. Many of her works are compiled from letters she wrote home to her sister in Scotland. An Account of Travels in the Interior including visits to the Aborigines of Yezo and the Shrine of Nikko. By Isabella L. Bird. Unbeaten Tracks in Japan is a travel diary written by Isabella Bird of her trip to Japan in 1878, at the age of 47. It was first published in English in 1881 by G. P. Putnam's Sons. It was later translated into Japanese by Tsurukichi Ito. It chronicles the trip Bird made with a Japanese interpreter named Ito in 1878 from about June until September from Tokyo to Hokkaido (then Ezo), and recorded such things as Japanese houses, clothing, the sex industry, and the natural environment in great detail, as they were during the early years of the Meiji restoration. It also has many descriptions of the Ainu people. The first edition was released in 1881 in two volumes and afterwards an edited version with a less detailed account of the Kansai area was released in 1885.
This evocative and lively travelogue by Isabella L. Bird lifts the veil of the culture of Colorado and the Rocky Mountains as it was in the 1870s. We find in this classic travel book an authentic and eloquent portrayal of the beautiful peaks and breath-taking landscapes of rural North America. Braving the craggy landscape on horseback and on foot, the author manages to conquer some of the area's most awe-inspiring ranges, while also observing life in several settlements and towns around the state of Colorado. The sheer toughness of the author shines through each of her letters. Her descriptions do not flinch from accuracy, as she notes the sub-zero temperatures, fierce drafts of wind, and other perils of the untamed landscape. Most notably of all however is Isabella Bird's steely determination and doggedness in confronting, and surmounting, the Rocky Mountains.
Isabella Bird, an Englishwoman whose extensive travels and writings earned her the first female membership of the Royal Geographic Society, visited the Rocky Mountains alone during the autumn of 1873. i]A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains /i], gives a fascinating description of life in the untamed Colorado Territory at a time when it was only notionally under the control of the American authorities, having been brutally seized from the Indians. Her intrepid journeys through remote areas are relayed in the form of fluent, achingly beautiful, highly spirited letters written to her sister. They tell of magnificent unspoiled landscapes, of small remote townships, of her encounters with rattlesnakes, wolves, pumas and grizzly bears and her reactions to the volatile pioneer settlers as they came to terms with their isolation, poverty and difficulties as immigrants in the wake of the Civil War. Bird's doctor adviced travel as a cure, so in 1854 she was given one hundred pounds by her father and told she could travel until her money ran out. Leaving Liverpool in June, she travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit cousins. Becoming restless, Bird undertook wider travels, covering nearly 6,000 miles, visiting Maine, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Quebec, New York, and Massachusetts. Adventurous from a young age, Bird gained a reputation as a writer and photographer interested in nature and the stories and cultures of people around the world. A bestselling author and the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society, Bird is recognized today as a pioneering woman whose contributions to travel writing, exploration, and philanthropy are immeasurable. In 1872--after a year of sailing from Britain to Australia and Hawaii--Isabella Bird journeyed by boat to San Francisco before making her way over land through California and Wyoming to the Colorado Territory. There, she befriended an outdoorsman named Rocky Mountain Jim, who guided her throughout the vast wilderness of Colorado and accompanied her during a journey of over 800 miles. Traveling on foot and on horseback--Bird was an experienced and skillful rider--the two formed a curious but formidable pair, eventually reaching the 14,259 foot (4346 m) summit of Longs Peak, making Bird one of the first women to accomplish the feat. A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains, Bird's most iconic work, was a bestseller upon publication, and has since inspired generations of readers. These letters, first published in 1879, were enormously popular in Bird's own lifetime and remain as wonderfully vivid and powerful as ever.Stanfords Travel Classics feature some of the finest historical travel writing in the English language, with authors hailing from both sides of the Atlantic.
